The oak trees with acorns are loosing their leaves on the windy days. The oak trees without acorns will hold their leaves all winter. The leaves will fall in the spring when the new growth starts.
The squirrels harvest the acorns by cutting the stem. They fall like a grape clusters and make a real mess. Everybody's lawn near the trees has holes all over the place from the squirrels burying the acorns. Smarter squirrels bury them close to house foundations because the snow melts there during mild spells like the January thaw.
lol - This year our oak had the largest bounty of acorns ever. Sooo many it was an incredible nuisance, but wonderful for the squirrels.
The tree just won't let go of the leaves as the blowing snow pings off them.
Other than the ones I picked up, I have no idea where all the nuts went.
One of my big oaks is having a banner crop here, making a mess of the drive way, and the deer are here every day/night scooping them up.
Did you give up your dear/bow hunting?

Yes I have PB..too old to climb into trees, knees not good for standing still for a long time, arthritic right hand does not like the tension of a bow string, and besides, I've killed enough critters to fill a lifetime.
Stay in good health and enjoy riding your bikes

Heh, heh, ... "How many critters does it take to fill a lifetime?"

Before that nasty weather in the midwest reaches my area, I grabbed my camera and went for a ride. I stopped at the Minisink Cemetery, one of many small cemeteries scattered around here. Some of the graves go back to the late 1700s.
