Salvaged a 90 mile ride this afternoon after originally planning to ride the “Southern Dip”, part of the “Ohio Windy 9”. The weather forecast yesterday for today was dismal so that ride was canceled.

On the way home, I rode across a road where I wrecked a 1979 Yamaha Special 750…..43 years ago this year.

I had just finished college, rented an apartment, started a new job and gotten married.

I had not ridden much in the last couple of years. My last bike was a CB450 when I was sophomore. I got the itch again and found this bike used with about 2,000 miles on it. I had never owned a Yamaha or a bike that size.

Another friend at the apartment complex had a similar bike and asked me to go on a ride with him. He had been riding a lot more than I had. Off we went with him leading.

Coming back home, we came across an “S” curve and, not being used to the bike, I came thru it too fast.
I went off the road into a culvert. The front wheel and forks bent underneath the bike. I went over the handlebars and my head hit the bank. The face shield split and cut my face. I hit my forehead directly on the bank. The residents across the road took me in their house and wiped the blood off of me. I later went to the hospital and got x-rays. Nothing broken..just a knot on my forehead and a headache. The x-ray technician said “he never understood when people ride motorcycles. I get people in here all the time after motorcycle wrecks”

The bike wasn’t totaled. It was taken on a tow truck to the nearest Yamaha shop. The driver took me back to my apartment.

But that wasn’t the bad part. My parents were driving down the day for dinner. They didn’t know I had purchased the bike.

When we opened the door, they saw my face. I had to tell them the whole story.
I had called my dad about two weeks earlier and asked him to send me $1,000 I had saved while working in college. He soon figured out what the money went towards. It was also my first loan to buy the bike.

The bike was repaired. My dad sent me a check to pay off the loan. He enclosed a handwritten note asking that I never ride again. I still have the note.

I just recently told my brother this story. He was unaware. He said “ our dad is probably turning over in his grave given how much you ride”.

After the wreck, I sold the bike and stayed away for 10-15 years while my sons were in school playing sports, etc. I wanted to be there for “those moments”.

Since then, I have owned 4 different touring bikes and ridden over 160,000 total miles, been to the Sturgis rally 4 times (1,550 riding miles/3 days one way) and traveled through all of the lower 48 states.

So, if I ride a little slower than you, maybe there is a reason. Maybe it’s nerves. Maybe I’m a little smarter. “It” can happen quicker than you think.

There’s a saying…”there are those who have wrecked and those that will.”

Slow down and enjoy the scenery. There are no prizes for arriving “first”.

Last Sunday while riding north for a quick errant, I ran into a 2016 Checkered flag CB1100.

Also noticed that the owner carries a spare fuel container confirming my same range anxiety issue.

While doing the fluid change on the front brakes (see "wheel sensors" https://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread...id337785),
I thought - let's look into the left side reservoir, see how the clutch fluid is doing. With the last change just over 12 months ago, I got really surprised about the mess I found. A darkish kind of soup, when measured with a high water contents.
It is clear that on the clutch side fluids will always suffer and get contaminated faster than in the brake lines. But this bad, it surprised me. No safety risk like a non-working brake, but I cannot imagine it's good for the clutch either.
The 24 months interval (even with low miles) may really be too long.

Recently bought two used HB top cases. Not a fan of the plastic headed keys that HB has and would like to replace them. Looked at several Ilco keys, none of which is a replacement. Moto Machines has HB keys but 1 key is ~ $25 shipped and is the large plastic head key. Anyone know of key blanks or a source for replacement keys?

These are the same as the ST6607 but with a silicon anti-drain back valve (ADBV). They are regularly $5.99 plus tax a Wally World.

I've used the ST6607 on my liquid cooled Shadows for a couple of years now with no complaints, but I prefer a silicon ADBV for the higher temps in the oil cooled CB1100.

$29.99 for a dozen with free shipping in the USA. With tax that's $2.70 each, less than the standard ST6607.

Mine arrived today in factory sealed cartons of 6 each. Opened to check for rust etc., these things are spotless. I'm happy.

Well, gonna probably trailer down to the Rally in Blueville this year. I have a good friend, Goldwing Dave, who will supply the covered trailer, just need a chock.

What do you all recommend for a good chock for the CB? I see the Condor comes well recommended. Any other good options?

Bought my CB1100 this past spring. I always loved the sound of a Honda inline 4, but my current Cobra header gets a bit louder when the exhaust system gets hot. Too loud and sounding like a sport bike is not a desirable feature for me. I am thinking about going back to the stock exhaust. Tell me why this is a good or bad idea if all I want is to quieten the bike down a little.

The helm website proposes the SM for the CB1100, from 2013 all the way up to 2017. Its title is " 2013-2017 CB1100/A Service Manual ". According to my research the following Honda codes apply to the different models :

A - stands for standard model
SA - for the DLX
CA - for the 2017 EX

In other words, I am not so sure this manual (order code 61MGC02 ), does really cover the CA. It seems to be for the CB1100 (?) and the CB1100A only. Would anybody who has this manual be able to help ?

Installed the new Moriwaki exhaust today. I used new Honda copper gaskets and the gasket/sealer that Moriwaki provided and coated the gaskets with it. I have all the pieces in the right place but it is not fully sealing. So, it’s obviously excessively noisy where the exhaust is connected to the engine/cylinders. Do I need to heat up the exhaust before I torque down the bolts to get a good seal or is there something I am missing, I bought three sets of gaskets in case something like this happened. I can add a short video with sound tomorrow. Thanks for the advice in advance. This forum has been immensely helpful.

The seat pictured was included in my 2014 CB purchase. Previous owner didn't know who made it. Can anyone provide any info? Thanks.
