Like BayAreaRick I've been wanting a DLX for quite some time. After an entire life of riding and enjoying Hondas, from a QA-50 minibike as a young boy in the 70's, to a CM400T when I was in college, all the way to owning a GL1800 and then a ST1300 as an adult, 3+ years ago I purchased a Triumph Tiger 800XC. An awesome bike. But the very day after I bought it I rode it to the local Honda dealer, took a test ride on the 2013 CB1100, loved it, and immediately wished I had not bought the Triumph because I fell in love with the look and feel and sound and memories stirred up from the CB1100.

Three years later, after a good bit of advice from members of this forum, and searching for about 2 months, I found and bought an immaculate DLX at Fay Myers Motorcycles in Colorado. Just over 1,000 miles on it. LongRanger checked it out for me and sent some excellent photos. It was picked up this past Saturday and is slowly making it's way to me in NJ. Haulbikes is my shipping company. So far I am very impressed with their customer service. Feels like you wait a bit longer than with others to get your bike, but anywhere to anywhere in the 48 states is $450.

Below are a few photos from the day of pick up. One is taken by the dealer, 2 by a forum member in town that day on business. Bike expected to arrive approximately August 5-7.

I sold the Triumph to someone who lives in Georgia for the exact amount I am purchasing this bike for. Loved being able to tell my wife that! "Honey, this isn't costing me a dollar!" Buyer is also using Haulbikes and they plan to pick up that bike tomorrow.

Hey Bay Area Rick, next time, how about if I buy the Long Island bike and you buy the Colorado bike? I could have ridden that one home in about 2 hours!

This is getting exciting...

I've had my scoot six days and today I was approached by a stranger in a restaurant who told me how much he was admiring my bike, parked just outside. Six days...........about time, huh? He did have white hair, but they say wisdom comes with age!

Can anyone help me post photos? I have a few jpgs from when my bike was recently picked up at the Fay Myers dealership in Colorado and thought others would enjoy seeing them. I am told they are too large.

Any advice on how to make them "smaller"? Anyone willing to have me email them the photos and load them on my behalf?

At lunch I went and filled up the bike as much as possible. Had a pump that had a really good slow speed flow which allowed me to put it on the center stand and trickle the gas and filled up the tank as full as I've EVER had it. Used 91 Octane as I always do. Drove back to work and parked bike for 4 hours. after work came out and bike was sitting in the sun and afternoon heat topped out at 93 degrees. Started fine and took off but about a hundred yards down the road bike started to stutter and just died. Turned starter over and it slowly started back up. Revved it a couple of times and took off again. Once more it cut out. Coasted off to the side of the road and opened tank to release pressure/vapor lock?. Started bike again and took off and kept the RPMs a little higher. Drove the 8 miles home without incident.

Thoughts on cause? Anybody else have this happen?

This thing looks like the perfect old guy bike.

My wife and I took a trip that last weekend up to one of the San Juan Islands in Washington state and she informed me that we need more luggage space. I've got the Honda rear rack and trunk for my deluxe but need to look for some saddle bags that work well with a passenger.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Hard bags that match the style and look of the bike (similar to VFR Interceptor bags) would be great but I'm probably not going to find those. Soft bags that attached to the rack under the trunk would work..

I stopped by my local dealer the other day and checked out their adventure bikes. I'm not planning on going off pavement but would like a more comfortable bike for long day trips.

BMW GS ($21K)
Honda VFR1200X (~$16K)
Versys 1000 LT ($13)

The BMW and the Honda are just too expensive in my opinion. Neither comes with any hard luggage so that would add more expense. The versys comes with the hard saddle bags.

Kawasaki is also offering a $1000 rebate for the 2016 versys 1000 so I talked to the sales guy about trading in my 2013 CB1100A. He said since my bike has "high mileage" (~15K) so he could only offer me $4900 for my bike. That would include the OEM rack and 35 L top case and my K&H "high" custom seat. I really like the versys seating position and am hoping that the suspension/seat would offer more comfort for long days in the saddle. I don't plan on taking overnight trips but I would like to take long day trips into northern NH and also Vermont and western Mass. Currently with the CB, I'm really cramped and sore when I take those trips.

I wish I could afford both motorcycles but that's not an option. The Versys seems too be a lot of motorcycle for the money but I'm going to have a rough time giving up the CB.

Does anyone have any thought on pros and cons of the versys 1000?

The versys doesn't do all that well in the press "shootouts" but the price point and a real smooth and sweet in line 4 are pluses for me.

Like Django, I too was drawn to the Roadcrafter one piece riding suit by Aerostich. I had actually been eyeing the R3 Light version for a couple of years now. Last month I received an email from Aerostich alerting me that all in stock Roadcrafter suits were being marked down 20% for a limited time. I had tried on a Roadcrafter suit previously when Aerostich came to Portland two of years ago and knew that the standard sizing fit me well so no modifications were needed. As a bonus, they had the grey/hi-viz color combo that I wanted in my size. I received the suit the evening before leaving for vacation so I didn't get a chance to try it out until this month. I was glad to read that Django was enjoying his Roadcrafter and I was hopeful that I would feel the same way.

I bought this suit primarily for my commuting duties as it easily slips on and off over my work clothes and it is waterproof so I don't have to worry whether or not to throw on a rain shell when heading out. I just put on the Roadcrafter and go This past week I've been able to test the suit out in the rain and out on a longer ride as we covered 170 miles on our Portland area CB1100 ride yesterday. Riding in the rain, I was kept perfectly dry by the Roadcrafter. The venting works great out on the open road. I wasn't expecting much from of a cooling effect from the venting when stuck in stop and go traffic and it doesn't deliver much under those conditions. Fortunately you don't have to be moving all that fast to enjoy the benefits of the venting, but the faster you are moving, the greater the cooling effect. All in all I'm really happy with the Aerostich. If I didn't ride to work year-round then I don't think that I would have spent the money on this suit. However, during actual commuting use I can already tell that this will be a great addition to my inventory of gear.

Spoke to Ricky Carmichael's yesterday and he is doing a lot better. His leg is still in a cast due to the severe injury to it. He is going through therapy for his hands. Insurance company totaled the bike. They said he could buy it back for just over $5k. Not sure if he's going to do it. He's doing the best he can for what he is going through.
