  throttle operation
Posted by: The Gecko_imp - 02-26-2024, 04:56 AM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (6)

Checked throttle operation (as I have done a few times before), anywhere between handle bar full left and (almost) full right the throttle free play is as prescribed in the books, but when I turn the handle bar that tiny little extra into full right all play is gone. Otherwise everything feels the way it should.
This situation is new, and I cannot see how this could be caused by the usual suspects. And simply using the adjuster seems counter intuitive, as it would change the setting over the full range. I can't see that the cable gets pinched somehow in the full right position.
Would you have any idea /s ?

The Cormanus Chronicles — Remembering Jake and Elwood

Preface
In early 2018, Pterodactyl, NoRoomtoMove and I managed to entice AussieFlyer to take to the road with us. We introduced him to the Great Alpine Road, the Omeo Valley Highway and the Bogong High Plains Road. The ride didn’t last as long as expected, so we agreed that we’d try again another time. Soon. Aussie Flyer and I had a plan to ride together for a day in 2019, but it was so hot we abandoned the plan and went out to lunch instead. En route to Tasmania in early 2020 I was joined by Pterodactyl for a day or two and then a day or so later by Aussie Flyer and NoRoomtoMove on some of the better local roads to the north of Melbourne.

Then there was covid.

Then I had both knees replaced.

Surely, almost four years later, it was about time to make a valiant attempt to put the band back together?

A note on maps
As usual, I’ve prepared maps of the journey. At the start of whatever nonsense I’ve written about each day there’ll be an image of the portion of the map covering that day. Underneath will be a link to the map from which it is taken. Clicking on that link will take you to Google Maps where you can view the entire portion of the route covered by the map and do all the fun things that Google Maps offers. In this case there are two main maps: [url=https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1ABt-HMtcUT7QB20xDoDdA61uMte9GP0&usp=sharing]Map #1, covering most of the journey; and [url=https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1TYCxvZiWMQORjl44JNaaO6Lz8Cf3hvo&usp=sharing]Map #2, covering the homeward section.

Chapter One

Warming up
Day 1 — Brisbane to Walcha

As mid 2022 was the last time I’d been on a long ride away from home ([url=http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=18075]see here), I was concerned about my ‘ride fitness’. First, obviously, I hadn’t ridden much long distance since mid 2022. Secondly, I’ve had new knees fitted. Thirdly, my new year’s present was a first dose of covid with after effects that were lingering a month later. Clearly, before saddling up with the blokes, I needed a warm up ride.

My wife and I had arrangements to visit old friends on the south coast of New South Wales (about 1,600 kms as the CB1100 travels or 1,210 kms by freeway. Mrs C declined to join me on the bike. I figured three or so days in the saddle would either sort me out or I’d have to stop for a rest and be late arriving.

So, it came to pass that at 0600 on 2 February 2024, I pointed the CB south, took the freeway to Grafton in Northern New South Wales to get some easy kms under my belt before taking to the hills and roads worth riding. The freeway’s the freeway, although probably quiet by the standards of more populous countries so 4 hours and one fuel and coffee stop later I was 300 + kms down the road and refuelling again to be sure I’d make it to the next bowser

A couple of shots from the freeway. In the second, a recently built bridge climbs nearly to the height of the old lift bridge.

‘Up the hill’ was the Armidale Road from Grafton to Armidale — long a favourite road, badly hit by fire in 2019-20. For a little over 100 kms it winds diagonally up the side of the Great Dividing Range to Ebor, a small town with police, a school, a motel and Fusspots Café. After that the road makes it way another 70 or so kms to Armidale. Since I was last on the stretch to Ebor, a bridge damaged by fire had been replaced and work had been done on the surface. As usual it was a great ride, although hot. Lunch and a cool drink at Fusspots was welcome.

These pictures may give some idea of why I like the road from Grafton to Armidale

NoRoomtoMove understands this

After lunch I rode the rest of the road to Armidale. It runs across the plateau of the Great Dividing Range and is fast and enjoyable. My right wrist was sore so I stopped at the motorcycle dealer in Armidale and bought a wrist rest. It took some getting used to, but provided considerable relief to my arthritic paw for the rest of the trip.

Just under 60 kms further down the road, and 587 kms from home, I stopped for the night at the Apsley Arms Hotel in Walcha.

Not bad for a first day back.

  Shoei RF1400 Nocturne
Posted by: pdedse - 02-25-2024, 03:33 PM - Forum: Riding Gear - Replies (48)

I gave a Torq helmet a try back in September, but I think I was just kidding myself as my oval noggin' wouldn't quite take to the Torq's round shape.

I looked long and hard for a light colored one that I liked. I went to a couple of stores and tried on an HJC i71. Felt really nice, but all white was just too bright--I guess that's the point, to be seen, but I didn't like the look. Their solid colors were ok, but not what I wanted this time around.

Kept looking and looking, but nada for a good week of internet searching. I've had two Shoei helmets and they simply fit me like a glove in medium. But most current prices are in the $650 range and up; a few crazy graffic ones are on sale, but not my style. The RF-SR are on sale at $400, but again solid colors or bright white; still, a decent price for a Shoei.

Then I found this one, an RF-1400 "Nocturne"

Hmmm...I was intrigued, but first few sites I found were selling them at regular prices, $670.

But then I started seeing some on sale for $600
[Image: 029ddb50d890319cb36ea7d87c180bbb.jpg]

Sure was looking nice from different angles...

I started seeing the cream and white contrast which is what makes it look less bright than other whites
[Image: ea50989fffd65daecaea9ed89e9edcc3.jpg]

More searches and I found one at $470. And the red / green w/ bottom black was really starting to grow on me.

Pulled the trigger as a place in NY had my size...but, alas, they emailed me back after I placed the order saying they had just run out of mediums. Ah well...

But then I found another site. A little more at $512; I called to confirm it was in stock...yes it was. Shoot, really more than I wanted to spend...but darn it the look grew on me. Should be here by Wednesday.

Not a fan of the too dark face shield (it comes with a clear one), but I'll be getting a light smoke shield.

The two Shoei helmets I have were great fits, the one I tried on at the store was just as nice, so I'm hopeful this one will be too. Def. more than I originally planned on spending, but I sure do like the color scheme. Looks Italian-flavored, but I'm buying it to please my Mexican neighbors and friends.

  Ride up to Snowbird
Posted by: Whoops - 02-25-2024, 12:38 AM - Forum: Seat Time - Replies (9)

After experiencing some unusually warm winter weather, I took a chance on the road up to Snowbird Ski Resort being snow and ice free so I could get a picture for the monthly photo challenge. Note to future self, don’t go up at such a time when you will be coming down with all the skiers leaving the resort. 15 minutes up, 1 hour 15 minutes to get back down.

I also wanted to experiment with placement of my external lavalier mic to capture engine and exhaust sounds to get rid of the overpowering wind noise that a chin mounted GoPro inevitably experiences. It did okay, I guess. It picked up a lot of chain noise however, and made the shifting sound quite a bit louder and clunkier. It also seemed to loose the crisp pop of the exhaust too and at times sounded like the volume overwhelms the mic. At least the wind noise seems to be gone though which means my foam baffle appears to be doing its job.

  Valve clearance price
Posted by: Maturecheese_imp - 02-25-2024, 12:09 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (44)

Just been quoted £750 by Thunder road to check the valve clearances during this years service, daylight robbery in my book. I'm old school and remember the eighties when bikes were a damn sight easier to maintain

I will probably sell my 1100RS now and get a Speedtwin as I'm not impressed with the service costs and with the speedtwin I could do that myself.

  HP Torque, Weight etc
Posted by: pdedse - 02-22-2024, 12:12 PM - Forum: Accessories/Modifications - Replies (9)

I'm curious about what more HP / Torque at different RPM really means when one takes into consideration the weight of the bike.

Powerdubs showed with dyno tests that his modified CB1100 showed more HP / Torque compared with a number of other bikes. But how much power is negated by the heft of a bike? The '17ex weighs 562 lbs. I checked the other bikes PD refers to and found the following...not sure all these are "wet" weights, but still gives one the idea:

Z900RS SE 472lbs
2023 Suzuki GSX-R600 412lbs
2023 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R 430lbs
2016 Triumph Thruxton R 450lbs
BMW NineRT 490lbs
Indian Scout 551lbs
Triumph speed twin 1200 476lbs
Street Triple RS 414lbs
Ducati Monster 1200 465lbs

With the exception of the Scout, all the bikes are around 100-150 lbs lighter. So in the world of riding, does PD's modified, but heftier CB1100, still "win" vs any of these bikes? Does it take off faster from a stop? Does it have more "passing power" at 70mph? A higher top speed (if it had no limiter)? Or by "win" are we just saying "it makes more power"?

Is there a formula that says, for example, "all other factors being roughly equal: for every 25 lbs (or whatever number), a heavier bike needs 5HP more (again, whatever number) to be equal in acceleration to a lighter bike?"

I'm curious.

Does anyone here run a stand-alone ECU? I'm looking at the AmpedFi Micro Squirt,[url=https://www.ampefi.com/product/ampd-microsquirt/]MICRO SQUIRT. Does anyone have any experience wiring one in and acquiring the mapping for a unit like this?

  Anti-slip 1 piece footpegs
Posted by: Transport_imp - 02-21-2024, 03:34 PM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (13)

Hi all.

My 2014 Blue babe has got slippery footpegs when wet.

These are the original footpegs and the rubber is quite slippery when I ride in or after the rain.

Do any of you fine persons know of a replacement solution or modification that doesn't involve a 2 part footrest (the ones that have the mount and then the pedal assemble with a bolt). I just don't trust those.

I've been looking but have not found anything yet.

Thanks
