They have a huge collection of Japanese domestic cars and other special interest and classic cars.

It's the end of Christmas Eve Down Under so I'll take the opportunity to thank members of the Forum for the good grace with you conduct yourselves. It makes this moderator's job very easy.

November 13, 2023

Unseasonably warm daytime temperatures here today and I'm on staycation this week. Great opportunity to jump on the bike for a late autumn jaunt.

The town of Glencoe, Kentucky is a railroad town that has seen better days, but it seems like things are turning around. This building used to be a real general store way back when, then probably a local market, and in my memory was a carry out and run-down bar. Apparently a lady bought it during Covid and spent 18 months renovating and decorating it. Now it's a really nice restaurant serving up wood-fired pizza as their specialty. Decent places to eat out in the small, hard-luck towns of rural Kentucky can be hard to find so when I saw this place, it looked like a food oasis in a restaurant desert.


My trusty CBR250R has never had a single mechanical or electrical fault in 11 years and 28,000 miles. It's a slow-bike-fast momentum machine, ideally suited to the twisting backroads of the Bluegrass State. It's incredibly flickable and extremely swift through corners with its light weight and short wheelbase.




I can't describe to you how unusual something like this is out in the country. The shelves on the right are filled with locally-sourced and prepared foods.




At my table waiting on my order. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming; I felt instantly at ease and comfortable. Crafts from local artisans are for sale in this area.


Despite being tempted by their signature wood-fired pizza, I'm restricting carbs and was more interested in warming up from the cooling late afternoon air with a piping hot bowl of chili with shredded cheddar and fresh onions. Plus, my favorite brew...Diet Dew. Chili was really hearty and delicious!


Looking forward to coming back in the summer and enjoying a meal alfresco. You can see the railroad tracks running along right in front of the row of white houses. Late fall shadows grow long with the sun low in the southwestern sky.


My loyal steed awaits, eager to attack more curves.

Along with two friends in my motorcycle club "The Cheese Weasels", I'm planning to ride > 300 miles / day from Las Vegas to Ely, Ely to Fernley, Fernley to Big Pine (CA), Big Pine back to Vegas. Flights are reserved, lodgings are reserved, bike rentals are reserved, so all there is to do now is think about the finer route details, sight-seeing / points of interest, and wait for the jumping off day to arrive in early May.

Here are the draft daily ride maps at this point.

Day 1 Vegas to Ely (need to add a detour into Valley of Fire state park per Nachodaddy)


Day 2 Ely to Fernley on US 50 "The Loneliest Road in America"


Day 3 Fernley to Big Pine, CA via Tonopah. Stopping to take a look at the [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crescent_Dunes_Solar_Energy_Project]Crescent Dunes solar thermal power plant. I was the project leader from my company to supply high-precision position feedback systems for the 10,000+ heliostats that focus the sun's energy on the tower. The overall project has been rather a bust financially because the business case was never really there (I think it was a money grab for the solar subsidies to be honest; the start-up that organized it was fly-by-night and folded after they unloaded it on an energy management company), but it's still an impressive "science fiction" installation.


Day 4 Big Pine to Las Vegas - bypassing most of Death Valley due to roads being washed out

This may not be applicable for the CB1100, but since this is the "other bike" section, it may find use for your "other bike"

Fender washers may not have been necessary inside the case, but I like robust.

I taped the bracket for 5 mm bolts, then added locking nuts to the back side. May not have been necessary.
