  Trailer wheel chock
Posted by: Buff7mm_imp - 05-09-2018, 08:42 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Looking for some input for a wheel chock for my enclosed trailer. I’d like to get one that is removable if possible since my trailer is not real big and I use it for other things.
I’m hoping that someone might steer me in the right direction for purchasing on for my enclosed trailer, any input is greatly appreciated.

rear rack/back rest / sissy bar
Posted by: jitaylor_imp - 05-08-2018, 08:15 AM - Forum: Accessories/Modifications - Replies (5)

I have been all through the forums and it looks like rear racks are thin on the ground for the cb1100. I am trying to figure out how to do that and have side cases or side soft luggage without losing the pillion.

I will keep pouring through the forums. In the mean time, if anyone has any ideas that will accomplish the above, I would be grateful to learn of them. Gee whiz, the stuff on twisted throttle is a bazillion dollars.

In 5 to 7 business days and i'll have a black CB 1100
Posted by: calipo223_imp - 05-07-2018, 01:46 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (14)

I'm trading in my Honda NC 700x and some cash and I'm receiving My new CB in about One week. The cycle cost me 7000 with all fees OTD in NH. I'll have to pay tax and title fee in Massachusetts where I live. I'm really excited and happy to have a CB again. This CB will be my Third. My other Two CB's if I Remember correctly was an 85 650 shaft drive, liquid cooled Nite hawk. And a 2001 750 Nite hawk. I believe this CB will be the best one yet!!! I think with the prices coming down more people are willing to take a chance on the CB.I Know some people have paid less out the door or more, but at 7K I think the CB is good value for the money. To Me, it just looks like a motorcycle should. The cycle is fast enough, smooth and bulletproof. This bike won't leave Me on the side of the road.

  Dropped Bike / mirror issue
Posted by: tommymck - 05-07-2018, 01:19 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (30)

I know....they say that there are those that have, and those that will. Having said that, I haven't dropped a bike since my YZ80 as a teenager in the late '70s. I'm a pilot too, and they say that there are those who have landed gear up, and those that will, but I've always rejected that line of thinking.

Well, today, with my brand spanking new CB1100EX, I dropped it. I have my "excuses". I was riding to work and the right side mirror was flopping lose in the breeze. Pulled over into a parking lot to sort it out and my normal procedure failed me. Unless I'm parking on a grade, I shift to neutral, put the kickstand down and wait to turn the bike off until I get off if it. For whatever reason (maybe because I was thinking too much about the mirror) I put the bike in neutral, got off, but didn't put the kick stand down. Sinking feeling.

Here's the good news though. It fell towards the left (port) side and landed on the oil cap. Not a scratch on the tail pipe, not a scratch on the tank, not a scratch on the bars. Notta. Just a very minor scratch on the oil cap. What a perfect excuse to get the vintage cap that's been advertised here on the forum. And in any case, 15 minutes of buffing would render it good-as-new. Really, I'm shocked at the fact that I dropped the bike and essentially no damage was done. Yeah, I was very stupid to do this. But what a great design that you can drop the thing and not sustain any real damage.

Couple of lessons for me. First, no matter how long I've been riding, a new bike throws me off of my normal routine. Gotta make sure I develop fail-safe procedures. For whatever reason, my BMW procedure fails me. Second is that when things go awry, that's the time to pay particular attention.

Now, on to the mirror. So, this was a bit of a mystery. When I took delivery of the bike, the mirror seemed fine. I rode it a couple of days and I didn't notice anything. But (and this was the right / starboard mirror), this morning it was completely lose, which I only noticed when on the road (it was flopping in the breeze). The mirror stalk counter-rotates to screw in as it turns out. After I dropped the bike, and after I figured out that it tightens with counter rotation, when I tightened it up, it was 180 degrees out of what it needed to be. The mating "nut" can be adjusted also, but it was loose for any configuration that had the stalk snugly mated. When I go to the office, I found a couple of washers that made the whole thing work out, but "stock", I don't see how you could ever adjust things to work out. Wondering if anybody else has had this problem.

At the end of the day, my bike still looks spiffy showroom new with just the most minor scratch to the oil cap. Gives me even more confidence in the bike....

  Dress Rehearsal Touring Load Out
Posted by: Mandrau_imp - 05-07-2018, 09:20 AM - Forum: Accessories/Modifications - Replies (15)

Did a four hour dress rehearsal ride this afternoon to test my current load out for mult-day/weeks touring. In the yellow Sea To Summit Big River 65L Dry Bag is all my camping gear: two man tent, ground sheet, sleeping bag, self-inflating pad, a chair, a canister stove, a tarp- poncho and clothes. There is room to spare. Notice the latch points on the bag which makes strapping it down (with ROK Straps of course) to the bikes rail a breeze. The bag material is thicker than it looks and not thin like other dry bags. The bag on top is an Oxford 18L Tail Bag that is actually water proof and has an outside pocket that is the perfect size for my iPad. The inside fits a 4L box of wine. The rig performed well today. I have an Oem luggage rack yet to install but as you can see, a naked CB1100 can carry a lot of stuff even without the rack. The only down side is that I will not be able to take on a damsel-in-distress passenger. Just as well - trying to down size and simplify my life anyway.

  Hi Viz Gear
Posted by: 2017EX_imp - 05-07-2018, 05:15 AM - Forum: Riding Gear - Replies (35)

I thought I would throw a couple of Hi Viz gear options out there for discussion. The subject for me was prompted by the following: Last fall, on a clear bright sunny day, I was sitting on my bike at a full stop with both feet on the ground, front brake on, and first in line at a stop light minding my own business. All of a sudden, I felt a jolt from behind me. It turns out that a middle aged woman in an SUV had bumped me from the rear. Long story shorter, my rear fender, tail light housing, and license plate bracket all had to be replaced ( fortunately she had full coverage insurance ). Thankfully, it did not knock me down. The first words out of the woman's mouth were " I did not see you", although I suspect the real reason was that she had probably been texting while driving. This episode got me to thinking about some Hi Viz gear ( yeah I know if a car driver is not paying any attention at all, Hi Viz will probably not matter ) that might increase my odds of being seen.

Hi Viz Vest: After much online research, I found a Fieldsheer On Base 2.0 Hi Viz orange mesh vest on close out. Unfortunately most vests of this type ( unless it is a cheap road construction type that flaps in the wind ) are over priced for what they actually are, IMHO. The vest was originally intended for military personnel for riding their bikes on base, and so has a military I.D. holder with clear window on the left chest. I removed the holder by carefully clipping the thread it was sewn onto the vest with. There are 3 sizes, SM- Med, Med-LG, and Xl-3Xl. The Med-Lg fit perfectly over my size Large jacket. There are also several silver reflective strips front and back, as well as a zip pocket on the left chest that will fit cell phone, DL, and Insurance Card. An internet search has them on close out as low as $29 ( original MSRP $60+ ). I got mine at Revzilla.com, price matching another online dealer. https://www.revzilla.com/product/fieldsh...-mesh-vest . I rarely ride without it now, and know it may or may not increase my chances of being seen, but at least I have done something proactive.

Helmet: I grew up in Illinois, just outside Chicago. In 1967 when I first started riding, not only was there a helmet law ( later repealed ) but the law also required a silver reflective tape strip be applied to the back of the helmet. The strip was about 4-5 inches long, and roughly 1.5 inches wide. I had not thought about that tape strip in years, until I got bumped from behind. The tape, I believe, is made by 3M, cheap and readily available in small quantities. As a result, and although I do not ride much at night if I can avoid it, I have been considering adding some carefully applied/positioned reflective tape strips to the back of my helmet.

Does anyone else have any experience with the High Visibility gear thing, and/or thoughts about helmet reflective strips and Hi Viz vests?
