So I’m about 95% sure I’m going to be picking a ‘14 DLX up later this week from another member here, and am pretty sure I’ll want to do something to the front prior to riding season truly setting in on this coast. If my research is correct, my options are the following, in increasing price order:

-Springs / oil (RT generally?).
-Traxxion damper kit / RT valving (~$400 each way I think)
-SDBV forks from the ‘17 (~$800)
-Full cartridge (Traxxion / Andreani ~$700-1k and the latter requires modifications)

Has anybody had the opportunity to compare two or more of these options against each other? Obviously the after market kits require setup.

As far as I can tell, the biggest different in the Showa forks is a different valve setup. I haven’t disassembled the forks myself obviously, but is there a reason why the solution has been bolting the entire fork assembly on vice switching internals? The parts fiche looks identical between the two, and the EX is the same 41MM tube size as the ‘13/‘14s.

I was poking around the BMW dealership today and came across a pamphlet for an extended warranty they sell. The warranty can be purchased for either new or used bikes, but for used bikes there's an interesting caveat: If the bike is a Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, or Yamaha, it has to be 12 model years old or newer, and must have less than 24,000 miles. All other bikes must be 6 model years old or newer and have less than 12,000 miles. I found that to be quite an indictment considering I was in a BMW shop!

As I am getting older, the 900+ pounds of the Goldwing is starting to get to be a bit much. And now that my wife has decided that her passenger riding days are over, I think it is time to start looking for a lighter bike. In my almost 40 years of riding I've become pretty loyal to Honda for the reliability and performance of their bikes, and I'm thinking that maybe the CB1100 EX is the bike I should be looking at.

I'm hoping for some input from folks here to help me with this decision. Back in the 1980's and early 1990's the Honda Nighthawk 750 seemed like the perfect do-anything bike, a true UJM. It appears that the CB100 is the modern version of that. I know that at 540 pounds it is not a lightweight, but compared to the Goldwing I know it would feel like an easy bike to handle.

Some specific thoughts I had include: Is Honda continuing this model or not? Looking at the Honda Powersports website they list the CB1100EX as a 2017, which seems odd now that we are in 2019. Is there aftermarket hard side bags that fit this bike? Without bags, what do you use for carrying some everyday basics like a rainsuit, extra gloves, etc.?

Do many of you use a windscreen, and if so, which one? My experience on other bikes has been that wind is too much of a problem when at highway speed without a windscreen, but I know I don't want something as big as the fairing and screen of my Goldwing.

I bought the Deluxe seat not knowing if it would fit or not and well,it does go on the bike but the back of the seat sits on the back edge of the grab rail and the angle is off so I’m making new brackets to get the grab rails to work with the new seat. I wanted an RS seat but that way too much of a gamble not knowing whether or not it would work. It’s odd that Honda would change the grab rail brackets between the Deluxe and Standard.

BIGGG congrats to Australian rider Toby Price for clenching his 2nd Dakar win today (with a broken wrist for the entire event ). This guy is truly an amazing athlete and gifted rider, tough as nails doesn’t even come close. His 2016 victory was preceded by a life threatening accident that should have left him paralyzed, but he blazed through his recovery to go on to win his first Dakar. This year may be an even more impressive feat, I cannot even imagine completing THE most grueling race in the world with a broken wrist (his right wrist none the less). Also worth noting is that today was his first stage victory of the rally. In other words, he didn’t win a single stage except for his last one. Something about the turtle and the hare......
Also big congrats to Team KTM for sweeping the podium, and continuing to dominate rally racing.

how long is the engine oil changing cycle in your official manual? Honda Taiwan is requiring that it must be replaced every 3,000 kilometers, because it is air-cooled. I cannot agree with it so I would like to ask you what it is in your manual.

Just curious. I see where HB now offers a hard bag system that mounts on their C Bow mounts. I also found that I could buy the mounting hardware that could be bolted to the back of my existing set of Givi E21 bags. I'm thinking:

Buy a set of C Bow mounts for my 2014 CB1100.
Buy the two pieces that would allow me to attach my E21 bags to the C Bow mounts.

I've used E21 bags on a W650 with aftermarket mounts (unfortunately not available for the CB1100) and on a set of mounts I cobbled up for a cross country on my Bonnie T100 in 2006.

Never talked with any CB riders who have installed a C Bow system.

I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.

I took liberty of writing few words about Honda motorcycle veteran.....

Chuck retired some time ago and he has a little background in mechanics etc.., he loves "manipulating" with his bikes...as this is his hobby
Over years, he's had over 120 street bikes !!.. mainly Goldwings..
Chuck bought them not running and restored them, rode them, then sold them...."what fun that was", he said ..
He's just sold his last 1800 Goldwing and bought "little red" 2017 CB1100 EX.. and he loves his "little red" one...
Chuck rides the twisty mountain roads mainly.. going on 200 mile loops often.. or close to that .. he carries an extra 1/2 gal of gas in one of his hard bags.. never had to use it. He's getting about 51 mpg on average..
