Extended warranty for used bikes - LongRanger_imp - 01-19-2019

I was poking around the BMW dealership today and came across a pamphlet for an extended warranty they sell. The warranty can be purchased for either new or used bikes, but for used bikes there's an interesting caveat: If the bike is a Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, or Yamaha, it has to be 12 model years old or newer, and must have less than 24,000 miles. All other bikes must be 6 model years old or newer and have less than 12,000 miles. I found that to be quite an indictment considering I was in a BMW shop!

No surprise there. I'm one of those people who value reliability above all else. Nothing worse that being 1000 miles from home when problems show up.

I learned decades ago (after owning an HD an old Triumph and a Duc) that you can't go wrong with one of the Japanese big 4 for overall reliability.

That is indeed a testament.

Was the shop a genuine BMW dealership, or an independent that happen to sell BMWs as its marque line? (if that is even possible)

How goes the search for a 2017?

It's a large, independent authorized BMW / Triumph dealership. I've known the owners for years. We don't have BMW factory-owned stores in the U.S.

I gave it up. My new bike budget was completely eaten up by an unexpected airplane expense. Looks like it'll be about a year before my finances recover.

Well that is cool. Any bias is mitigated by promoting multiple brands. Glad to read Japanese bikes get some extra respect.

A few years ago, Consumer Reports did a report on motorcycle reliability. They found owners reported problems on Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Honda at 11%, 13%, and 14% respectively. H-D and BMW came in at 24% and 30%, yet oddly enough, they had the highest owner loyalty.

What was that saying about a fool and his money.........?

Those are surprising stats - for me anyway, except for the said Japanese brands. I reckon the Italian brands didn't make the shortlist.
