When I started writing this post I thought the 'Like' button was just another of the many legacies of the odious Facebook. As so often happens I was mistaken. In fact, it apparently first appeared on Vimeo where it was seen as an iteration of the 'digg' feature from digg.com. See here.

There are occasions where being able to click 'Like' is an easy way to say you appreciate something without having to write about it — for example, alprider's never-ending stream of photographs of motorcycles in beautiful places for which, so far as I'm concerned, there are no longer any useful superlatives.

But there are other occasions too.

In June pdedse set off for a big ride across the country. A couple of days in, his back started to give him merry hell and he made the decision to turn for home. See this post. It seemed very sad to me that a dreamed-of adventure came to a premature end, but I noticed that a number of members 'liked' the post. I make no criticism of that choice, but I it made me wonder what were they 'liking'? That he was injured? That he had to turn tail and retreat? That Cormanus would be denied the pleasure of a vicarious ride? Or did they just like that he had posted an update on his adventure even though there was nothing to like in the content?

It made me wonder exactly what 'like' means in the online contest. Is it the content of the post? Not for me in this case. I didn't 'like' pdedse's news at all; I felt very sad for him. So, how could I click 'Like'? Or is it a simple way of acknowledging one's read a post? That's not 'liking' something in the normally accepted meaning of the word. On this occasion it just didn't sit comfortably with me so I wrote and posted words expressing my sadness at his news. Other members 'liked' my post and that makes some kind of sense. It's easier and probably uses less forum storage than a post saying "^^+1" or writing words similar to mine.

The purpose of this post is simply to try to garner some views on the protocol of using the 'Like' button. I strongly support rdprdp01's decision not to have a 'dislike' option and I'm really happy not to have the option to insert one of a range of emoticons.

Thoughts? Witty, frivolous, serious, I don't mind. A conversation helps to pass the time.

Does a thread on books related to motorcycles exist on this forum? I searched a bit but didn't find any.  One could search the 'net / amazon, but sometimes it's nice to get a recommendation / suggestion.

I dream of riding around Australia one day and this book looks like a good find.

I have my valve cover off to check valve clearances ... and at the same time took all the engine covers off to polish and re-clearcoat (will discuss in later post on refinishing)[attachment=475].  The valve cover has a baffle/cover on the inside held in by 4 bolts so I took it of to see what was underneath.  Well under the coveer is just a channel that leads to the tube connecting to the seperate breather box.  The baffle cover has some type of hard cardboard'ish layer under it that is buckled/warped in several place.  I feel this may just be a noise damper of some type but don't know.  I was wondering if it this "damper" an be replaced.  Does anybody know?

I'm a relatively new member on the forum, and a brand-new CB1100 owner.  I picked up DLX number 119 yesterday evening and trailered it home.  It's in decent shape, but needs a little attention.  I'll be coming back for advice on anything I can't find already on the forum.  I'll be putting the original exhaust back on.  But the first thing I'll do is get some new rubber on it.  And I don't mean tires

I joined my local fire department early this year and finished up my initial training at end of June that allowed me to go interior on a fire call. I would highly recommend the experience to anyone with a local volunteer fire department. The work is mentally and physically demanding, but great excuse to keep in shape and help out your local community in an amazing and selfless way. (It was my excuse to quit cigarettes. I have been clean since January this year with my only "slip-up" being a camping/fishing trip this spring)
Last night we had the first structure fire I got to go interior on. Long night, call came in at 10pm and we finished up everything by 3am. It was fun, but also, I am tired as **** today at work lol. 

Anyways, just a note to those that like to do our own work. Seriously watch and always pay attention to what you are doing in the shop that could be a fire hazard. I myself do a lot of metalworking/welding in my shop and since joining the department have changed a lot of how I do things in my shop. Especially being that ANYTHING flammable is in a safe secure location and putting multiple extinguishers around my property incase anything were to happen. One lone spark can cost people their entire house, all their belongings and family memorabilia. I would hate to lose priceless photos of my grandparents and great grandparents that I have. 

So do your due diligence and keep your place as safe as you can. Accidents do happen but being prepared can be the difference between using a $100 fire extinguisher or all of your belongings. 

To those wondering, this fire was started by cutting/grinding metal next to a gas can... and I don't think I need to explain why that is a bad idea. 
Also, most fire departments will not charge you a dime for their services. If you're worried about it, make the call. Trying to fight something with your garden hose is not going to go well, and all you would be doing is delaying the call to get help on its way.

The original CB1100 Forum (cb1100forum.com) had a limit of 250kb on the size image files that could be uploaded. This meant that members mostly resorted to using a photo hosting service and linking to pictures. rdprdp01, the owner of this forum, has generously increased the size limit for individual images to 4MB which makes using the forum as a storage facility more attractive although, as standard image file sizes increase with each iteration of smart phones, there is still a need to reduce image files to less than 4MB.
 
However, to my mind at least, using the forum has two notable disadvantages: first, it requires a little more effort to place the image exactly where you want it in your post; and secondly, it is not as easy to recycle images you've already uploaded.
 
This post aims to provide guidance on using the upload attachments feature of the forum.
 
Step 1
You can't upload a photo unless you're in the 'New Thread' or 'New Reply' area of the forum. It can't be done from the 'Quick Reply' box at the bottom of each thread.
 
When you click 'New Thread' or 'New Reply' you get a new screen with the compose window/box. Underneath is the Attachments window/box.

 
As instructed, drag and drop the image or click within the box to upload an attachment through whatever means your operating environment uses to let you locate the files you want to upload.

STEP 2
Upload a picture When you've uploaded a picture(s), you should see the file name of the picture(s) — I've highlighted it in the box below. You should also see the 'Remove' and 'Insert into Post' buttons.
 
If you do not see this information, the picture has not uploaded. The most likely reason is that the file size of the picture or pictures is more than 2MB.
 

 
This next image just shows what happens when you add another attachment. While it may seem to have no relevance at this point, I'll refer to it later.
 

 
 STEP 3
Now you have your attachments uploaded, you're done. You'll see the following. However, in order to post the message, you must enter some text in the Message box.
 
If all you want to post is the picture, and you don't want any text in the post, read on.
 


 
Click the 'Post Thread' button and your picture(s) will appear on the forum. If you click on the 'Preview Post' button, you'll see the following.

 
 
STEP 4
You may be happy just to post the picture, but, as you can see from the image above, the pictures appear in a box headed 'Attached Files'. What if you want some control over where the image appears in relation to the text you're writing or you want simply to post the image without any accompanying text?
 
Click on the 'Insert Into Post' button (see picture below).

 
Your post will now contain references to the Attachments in square brackets. Place those references where you want the picture to appear in relation to the text. The screen should look like the image below. Alternatively, if all you want to do is post the images, you can do so now.

 
Preview that post and you should see something like this:

 
 
If you haven't clicked the 'Insert Into Post' button for one or more of the images, your preview will look something like the following: the first two images have been inserted but the third hasn't.

 
As you can see above the attached picture that hasn't been inserted appears in the preview at the bottom of the post in the 'Attached Files' box. It will always be there in the preview and also in any post. You'll have no control over the placement of that image.
 
Reusing images already uploaded
You'll have noticed above, that once inserted in the post, the picture attachment has a number. That becomes relevant if you ever want to use the same image again. To find an image already used look on the left of the compose screen, or in your User CP. There you'll see, under the heading 'Miscellaneous' an item 'Manage Attachments'. It's highlighted below. (Apologies for the size of the image. I can't make it smaller.)
 

 
Click on it to be taken to the 'Attachment Manager' screen:

 
Let's say I want to reuse the first attachment (IMG_9459 copy.jpg). Click on it and it will display in a new window of the browser.

M in SC recently posted about replacing his CB1100's rear shocks at 10K miles.  He mentioned IKON if I recall.  What all shock brands are available for a 2014 CB1100?  when mine wear out, what other brands other than OEM are there to consider?  Is there a consensus on which replacement one works best?

I saw this joke online yesterday and, for some reason, it reminded me of the Forum.

I just learned that "Naked Running," means running without GPS, earphones, cellphone or other music or electronic gear. 
Wish I'd have known that an hour ago.

So... my fork brace got here today.  It is very generic, comes from SFriding, I am a little embarrassed to say I found it on Amazon, but it was only $80 and I figured if it was a piece of junk I would just send it back.

Well, it is more robust than it looked in the pictures and the tolerances seemed excellent so I went ahead and mounted it... and then it has been raining most of the rest of the day.  I didn't take time to weigh it, but it is light enough I am not going to care.  

I figured I would post a picture.  

Only problem is now the back end is jealous of the front end Al treatment and I just found out about the Over Racing Al swingarm for our bikes (but man, that's a lot of loot).
