The call out for the CB1100 is "JASO T 903 standard MA, or higher". While a little vague, "higher" appears to mean MA1 or MA2. The MB rating has much different friction numbers, which supports this statement "JASO MA is the category for high clutch friction oils and JASO MB is for low friction oils" made by the Chairman of the JASO Motorcycle Oil Working Group, in a different article.

I presume that the "MB" rated oils would have the words "Energy Conserving" or "Resource Conserving" showing on the API label, that the manual clearly instructs us to avoid.

I took the day off and decided to take the CB out for another ride through the mountains. With most people at work, I had many of the roads to myself - a rarity in Southern California. The weather was perfect - mid-70's at the start and just a bit cooler at the top. I rode at a relaxed, comfortable pace with no worries about having to be anywhere or see anyone. It was fantastic.

Highway 94 has great corners as it winds its way east towards the foothills. The CB turns in so easily and feels so well planted. I'm starting to think these Dunlop's are actually pretty good. Within half an hour of riding, I had horses on one side, cows on the other. Large plots of open land with small farms separated by mom and pop stores selling feed, coffee and pulled pork sandwiches on either side of the nicely paved two-lane road.

At the one hour mark, I make it to the base of Sunrise Highway and Mt. Laguna. Just a couple of cars in front of me but they politely use the turnouts and allow me to pass. The turns on the ride up tend to be wider. You get to hold a nice lean for an extended period of time. Sweeping right, rolling on the throttle, picking her up and then dropping in to a smooth, long left-hander. The CB just doing everything I ask of it wonderfully. What an amazing motorcycle.

To the east of Mt. Laguna lies the Anza Borrego Desert. The view is beautiful at times with the steep sides of the mountain dropping down to the edge of the desert. In the past, I've seen hang gliders riding the thermals coming up off the desert floor and up the side of the mountain. But not today. I stopped at one of the turnouts and took a couple pics of the bike. I tried to capture the desert but my camera just couldn't do the landscape justice. It's something you just have to see in person.

The descent down the opposite side of the mountain is a little faster. The corners are a bit tighter. As I near the bottom, a little more traffic. Still, nothing to complain about. Other people like me, taking advantage of the weather and lack of crowds. Most of them in cars but every now and then, two or three motorcycles pass going the opposite way. We wave at each other and know how good we have it.

At the second hour mark, I roll into Julian with thoughts of apple pie. But it's really crowded. A high school cheer team is walking down the road, the eagle mascot in front, holding the large eagle head under her arm. Two teenage skateboarders with no shirts and long blond hair, looking like they're straight out of the 70's, ride past the cheerleaders and pat each on the head as they pass. Some of the girls laugh. Some of them yell. I'm tempted to pat them on the head as I ride past too. But I don't.

Just off the main street is a gathering of about a dozen sport bikes. All parked in a row. Looking fast even at a stand still. The riders in a variety of leather mingle by the edge of the road. They seem to talk as fast as they ride. Every one of them seems happy. I decide against the apple pie. The road turns west and I follow it. Even HD riders tend to wave in the mountains. I know that won't be the case when I make it back to the coast. I wave at all of them. Except the guy on the Can-Am Spyder with the cute girl behind him. I don't know why I didn't wave to him. I decide that in the future, if the person is wearing a helmet, I'll wave. Maybe not a bicycle helmet but definitely a NASCAR helmet or even a Viking helmet.

Three hours into the ride and I'm close to my neighborhood. I stop at the gas station and fill up. When I get the urge to hit the road again, I'll be ready. I hit the garage door opener inside my chest pocket and pull up next to my lovely, neglected, VFR800. I pop the CB up onto its center stand, take off my gloves, unzip my jacket, undo my chin strap and lift off my helmet. I remove my ear plugs and hear the tink, ping, tink of the engine as she starts to cool. A spray of Plexus and a microfiber towel wipes what remains of a few bugs from the paint and from my helmet.

Before walking into the house I stop and look back at my motorcycles. I stand there for a moment. Not sure what I was thinking. Feeling more than anything. What a great day. Going to get cleaned up and hang out with my son. I need to take Fridays off more often.

Hello everyone. I had my grab handles powder coated black to blend in with the black side covers. It only cost $20, compared to $180 to order a black set from the 2014 model from Honda. I was hoping they would be a little less shiny, but they will do. Has anyone else changed their handles to a different color? If so, did you paint or powder coat them? Any pictures to share? Thanks.

I love deerskin gloves. Have worn them for 30 years or more. Soft, supple, comfortable from the first second you put them on, lightweight, yet they can comfortably be worn in temperatures way lower and way higher than you think you could. Personally I wear them in the same temp ranges where I would my leather jacket ..from 40 to 90. They are thin enough to fold and stick in a jacket pocket without the pocket bulging out funny.

My main pair was starting to sun fade (color wise turning from black to gray) and I lamented that to my wife. She ordered me a new pair from some place called American Leathers I think. However I found I was still wearing the old pair for the most part and saving the new ones. Always good to have a pair for back up just in case.

Anyhow both my old pair and the new pair had short cuffs and I noticed during the Fall Men's Ride, when we'd take off in the mid 40's in the mornings, cool air would sometimes work it's way past the short cuff of the glove and up the sleeve of my leather.

I found out online that Fox Creek who made my new leather jacket also makes a gauntleted black deerskin glove. I called up Fox Creek and after assurances the gauntlets would indeed go over the sleeves on my leather jacket I ordered up a pair. For $59 and free shipping, it was a no-brainer (even for a tight wad like me).

They came in today. All I can say is awesome! All the great features of my regular short cuff deerskin gloves only with a gauntlet that indeed fits over the jacket sleeves. Once again Fox Creek has made me a happy man.

I don't enjoy making posts such as this one. You guys have probably noticed that I don't post here during the weekdays while I'm at work. But today I had an exceptionally close call and just wanted to remind everyone to stay alert out there.

On my commute to work this morning I was headed into an intersection and I had the green light. There were cars stopped in both directions at the red light on the crossing street. Out of the blue, the car to my right decides to blow the light and cross — right in front of me. I hit the brakes hard and fortunately they did an amazing job of hauling the bike down to a quick stop. Luckily there was plenty of room between me and the car behind me.

There were witnesses screaming at the woman driving the car, and I probably could have chased her down and obtained a license plate number but frankly I was a bit dazed at that point and just wanted to move along rather than continue to be a sitting duck in the middle of the street.

So whether you're just out riding for pleasure or commuting like me, take note and take care.

When I ride my CB to work I'm usually in my Dockers, casual shoes, button-up shirt, with leather or mesh Dainese jacket over top.
Our CB would fit the bill to the "T".

Not sure if it fits the standard. Is there a different right side mounting point on the DLX?

Just got done checking the valves at 21,000 miles. They were all exactly the same as they were at 8,000, pretty much right down the middle. The plugs looked like new as well. I think I'm going to push the valves and plugs out to once every 16,000 miles.

I have never owned a bike that changes each time you ride. Sometimes the bike is very low on vibs in the tank, pegs and bars and there are other times when this bikes has much more noise. Throttle response is spot on regardless of this but i can't figure out what causes the excessive vibration at times. The vibs are never in the seat and when you pull in the clutch its smooth as glass so its the motor. Its never to the point that you think there's a problem with the motor just annoying as heck. Amazing how it can go from smooth to buzzy just stopping for gas.
Its done this from when it was new with no mods.

Edit: A buddy of mine just bought a Ninja 1000 and we switched bikes yesterday for awhile, he thought the CB handled great in comparison to the older CB's but asked if its always a bit buzzy, i told him ride it tomorrow and it may be gone
