Oh No! - More Engine Oil Discussion... - DGShannon_imp - 10-11-2014 While searching for info regarding the standards called out for our bike, I stumbled across this: http://lubrizol.com/MCEO/Spec-Check/JASO-T903-Four-Stroke.html Scroll to the bottom to see how the different ratings (MA, MA1, MA2 & MB) effect the feel and engagement of the clutch. The call out for the CB1100 is "JASO T 903 standard MA, or higher". While a little vague, "higher" appears to mean MA1 or MA2. The MB rating has much different friction numbers, which supports this statement "JASO MA is the category for high clutch friction oils and JASO MB is for low friction oils" made by the Chairman of the JASO Motorcycle Oil Working Group, in a different article. I presume that the "MB" rated oils would have the words "Energy Conserving" or "Resource Conserving" showing on the API label, that the manual clearly instructs us to avoid. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves... C-ya, now I'M outta here ! Oh No! - More Engine Oil Discussion... - Cormanus - 10-11-2014 Mate, I'm confused. You say [url=http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=4199&pid=62828#pid62828]here that this forum is about sharing the love. Then you toss a grenade like that and do a runner. What are we to think? Are you a lover or a fighter? I was glad to have come across some true measurement numbers, and was hoping it provided information, rather than emotion!
RE: Oh No! - More Engine Oil Discussion... - the Ferret - 10-11-2014 DG with oil, for some reason it's all emotion Oh No! - More Engine Oil Discussion... - Cormanus - 10-12-2014 Now, look, you blokes, go easy on the Pterodactyl. I'm about to go riding with him again and I can't have him riding along chugging over proof Bundaberg Rum 'cause he's upset about an oil thread.
RE: Oh No! - More Engine Oil Discussion... - AzBob_imp - 10-13-2014 Standard MA encompasses MA1 and MA2, if memory serves. A couple of new ratings were necessary because the MA standard had too wide a gamut with regard to friction specification. Some newer bikes specify one of MA1 or MA2 (the BMW K1600 comes to mind). Your bike can use a higher specification, but not lower. So if MA is specified, MA, MA1, or MA2 can be used, if MA1 is specified, MA1 or MA2 may be used, and finally, if MA2 is specified, ONLY MA2 may be used. |
