I said farkle because I've been on ADVrider for 15 years and on this forum only five. Farkle is a word that is perfectly useful for me and many others.


I installed the Dart flyscreen today. It had been sitting in the shop for a long time. So, as of today, I "think" these are all the changes I have made:

I'm 6'2", 200#, 34-inch inseam. I think this bike fits me perfectly!!




This is what the Ventura luggage looks like for an overnighter. Takes five minutes max to get them on securely. 30 seconds to get them off at my destination. In the photo, there are two bags. They zip together conveniently on each side. The front bag is supported by the seat. The rear bag is supported by the rack Ventura provides. Their racks are made for very specific bikes. Although they are "universal" in appearance, they are actually custom fit, in this case for a CB1100.


If I do more, it will be because I have Chic Designs front/rear fenders and a Road Comet in the shop. I bought them, like a lot of the other farkles, from forum members that were selling their bikes. If I can ever settle on a paint scheme, I just might do a whole makeover. But I change my mind about colors and such almost weekly. So there's that...

Hey, looky there! The CB1000R uses the same heated grips with the green indicator light that's on my '17 CB1100 EX. I guess the parts guy where I bought my bike wasn't blowing smoke up my behind when he said these new, hotter grips with the green light are the latest factory spec from Honda...



Anyway, I think Honda will have a nice little hit on their hands with this bike. I agree with the testers who say that the CB1000R is aimed more at the RnineT, Thruxton R, Z900RS, and Scrambler/Monster 1100 than the super nakeds such as the Tuono R, Super Duke R, S1000R, and MT-10. As such, it will bury the former while acquitting itself quite well against the latter.

What has me drooling over this bike is the same thing that won me over regarding the '17 CB1100 EX: the amazing overall fit and finish, and the extraordinary level of refinement. This new CB looks to be an absolute jewel.

It also helps that I like its looks a whole lot more than those of the BMW, Kawi, and either Ducati. I admire the looks of the Triumph, but I still prefer the Honda.

Speaking of Triumph, probably the bike that is truly the closest competition for the CB1000R is not the Thruxton R, but the Speed Triple. Similar weight, power, seating position, refinement, and price. The Triumph with its barking Triple probably has more of a distinct personality, but all things being equal I'd still take the Honda. The only somewhat similar bike that I might take over this Honda is the S1000R, but only if BMW eliminated the excessive engine buzz while also raising the bars. I think they've fixed the first issue, but those bars are still too aggressive for my fused-and-plated-together neck.

For that matter, the seating position on this new CB may also be too aggressive for my neck. Otherwise, it's the current leader in the clubhouse.

In case you can't tell, yep, I'm a big fan. In place of my XSR900 I would love to have a black CB1000R sitting beside my dazzling red CB1100 EX. Two high-class Hondas: one CB that's fast, agile, thoroughly modern, and absolutely bad to the bone; the other CB being the prettiest, most painstakingly refined, deep-down real retro on the planet.

Today I had to ride thru this intersection.



Big deal? A little back story:

The road's a bit different than it was 49 years ago. Back then it was a 2 lane road. It was the summer of 1969. I had ridden my 67 Honda CL 77 aka 305 Scrambler, across town to visit my oldest sister. I was wearing a white Buco open face helmet, and Hi Point glasses for eye protection. I can't remember what else I was wearing but no doubt a t-shirt of some kind, blue jeans and work boots, maybe a blue jean jacket, can't be sure. My normal attire in those days. Since it was summer I doubt if I was wearing any gloves. After visiting my sis I headed back towards home and while riding towards this intersection, a green 54 Dodge driven by an older lady was coming the opposite direction. Just as I entered the intersection, she swung left in front of me headed for the side street (visible on the right in the picture). I hit her in the passenger door, went over the top of her car and landed helmet first on the ground on the opposite side. I was knocked unconscious, but the helmet saved my life I suppose. It was cracked (but my skull wasn't). The impact knocked the helmet into the glasses which smashed into my nose breaking it. My right hand was broken, as was my right foot. I also had amassed 7 broken teeth and a bunch of gravel in my lips and gums. BTW my right big toe is still a mess (the toenail used to fall off every year, but that stopped about 10 years ago, and now it's just thick, crooked and ugly lol), and my teeth are still cracked and chipped. My right hand healed but I really only have 1 knuckle you can see on that hand when I make a fist. My Honda was totaled. After the emergency room visit I recuperated at my mom and dad's house in my old room. The insurance company paid me $3400 for my bike and my injuries (not enough IMO considering I still have side effects nearly 1/2 century later). I used part of the money to buy a new green and white 1969 CB 350 Honda for $799 I think. Had to pay an extra $8 for a right hand mirror, as it only came with a left.

Anyhow today I googled how to get to the place where my Granddaughter's graduation will take place the day the Ky Rally ends and thought I'd do a trial run there, so I'm not lost or late that day. Reading the map I saw I had to go across this road. Even though it's been 49 years I suddenly felt some trepidation. I thought that was silly. I suited up and headed out, and the closer I got to that spot, the more uneasiness I felt. Luckily when I got there, nobody was turning left, and I made it thru the intersection unscathed, but wow was that weird! I have no desire to run that road again, and will take another route to my Granddaughter's graduation.

Hard to believe that you can be afraid of a spot where something bad happened to you nearly a half century before, but I'm here to tell you it's true.

I bought a Dart flyscreen form a forum member more than a year ago. It's been sitting in my apparently unorganized shop. All I can find right now is the windscreen itself. None of the other pieces such as brackets and bolts.

I'm hoping someone with a Dart flyscreen has the installation instructions that will also serve as a parts list.

A pdf.file would be great!! That way I know what I'm looking for...

I was wondering if anyone knows where I might procure the slipon in this image?
I follow this guy on Instagram, and he says it's an R&R Short Can, but my googling skills are apparently subpar as I can't find it anywhere. I'd even take anything of a similar style.

I'd like to have a few different pipes for different purposes considering it is so easy to swap.

Does it balance the crankshaft or the transmission shaft?

He had the good sense to notice that we hadn’t rode out in a while, and took the initiative to see if PowderToastMan, RandyB, and I might be of like mind. Well, his intuition was spot on. We were kind of bummed that Randy couldn’t make it, but we three got out for a good ride through the Santa Cruz mountains and a darn fine lunch at Alice’s. Get out your maps, now, because we hit the mountains hard.

We started out at a Starbucks in Campbell, CA, where we caught up over coffee. We’ve been getting together for 4+ years now, so that’s always fun. From there, we headed towards Santa Cruz on 17, took Old Santa Cruz up to Summit, then down Soquel-San José to Soquel, up Rt 1 to gas up at Costco in Santa Cruz, then up 9 to a left to climb Felton Empire, then Empire Grade to Alba and Back down to Boulder Creek. Full, Powder headed down the mountain to go home, and Pauley and I continued north on Skyline to 92 until we split up just before the San Mateo Bridge, as I went home to Belmont and he continued on over that majestic bridge about 45 miles to his place. Good stuff
