I needed to replace the battery on my 2013. It had the original Yuasa YTZ14S that retailed from Honda for $188. The YTZ line is Yuasa's best technology, but I thought I'd look at cheaper replacements, and there were plenty.

I've had good luck with them in the past, but when I ordered one for under $40 shipped, I received something a much lighter one. The original battery weighs 8.6 pounds, but the replacement weighed 2.2 pounds less, even though the model was the same. (KMG brand YTZ14S, made in China of course)

They were among several Yuasa battery models with the same footprint and the same or similar height, with different amp rating and cranking amp, and of course, weight. Mine correlated to a YTX9-BS that had only 135 cold cranking amps, compared to the original's 230cca rating.

Still, I needed a battery, so even though it had over 13.1 volts, I charged it overnight for its best chance of longevity. The next day it had 13.8 volts, I installed it, and the bike cranked over willingly.

Four cylinders crank evenly with much less effort than a twin or single, and I'm in a warm climate. Even so, I don't trust it as much as the original, but I'll keep an eye on it.
Caveat emptor

They're not a 100% perfect color match (lighting in garage doesn't highlight the difference) but I knew that going in. I'm ok with that as you really do have to look closely to see the difference. They look as good as new however. Plus the old school look to the 1100 emblem more than makes up for the ever so slight color disparity.

Now on to installing the Yoshimura pipe I picked up from Pekingduck. The pipe is just something I'd thought I'd try. Didn't get it for increased decibel or performance level but for looks just to see how all this plays out. I do have the silencer insert if it turns out I like the look but think it may be too loud.

I'm keen on a CB1100 and am contemplating the RS or EX. It seems that moto journo's like the EX for ride/handling and more authentic retro looks. I've only ridden the RS.

The general use-case is weekend and evening rides to the Norfolk/Suffolk coast (80-mile round trip) and I'm planning on doing some touring in Europe next year to Switzerland and Italy.

I am thinking the RS with tubeless tyres would be a good option, with easier availability and a wider choice of tyres easier to repair.

RS owners, can you tell me why you chose the RS over the EX and EX-owners, any benefits for my use-case I'm missing?

I get it. My point is this. The CB 1100 has been designed, engineered, and manufactered as a UJM. If you want/need more modern technology, then buy a CB 1000R.
DBM, I'm not trying to pick a fight; I'm interested in your view and that of others on this oft-posed question. I've started this thread because I'd like to discuss it in a general way without reference to individual members' decisions about their bikes.

The CB1100 is hardly a UJM of the 70s and 80s. While looking a bit like one, it's really thoroughly modern with fine brakes, fuel injection, a computer under the tank working lots of stuff out on the fly in a thoroughly modern way. Some of them have ABS and fuel gauges and fancy calculators to tell you how much fuel you've used and how far you have to go before you run out. The new-fangled ones even have a slipper clutch and dual bending forks. How long will it be, if the model continues to roll out, before there are electronic suspension and power settings?

Should that not be the case? Should we all still be riding a 70s or 80s UJM? If it is OK for the bikes to evolve, why shouldn't people upgrade their older CB1100 to take advantage of it?

More generally, why shouldn't people modify their bikes in any way they want?

I ride with a Nolan N104, it doesn't have D rings and trying to lock the helmet using the helmet lock is rather difficult trying to fit the strap over the lock. Anyone have a Nolan and better solution?

Right eye is moving farther to the right, just in the last couple days, but double vision looking right of center persists.

Dealer still has the CB1100 for sale for $6,999 with 12,523 miles.
Sold it back to them Sep 4, almost a month (and 1,000 miles!) after the eye issue started.
