Removing throttle cable from throttle tube?
#1
Hi gang,
I am trying to reroute the throttle cables and I think I need to remove the throttle cable ends from the throttle tube. I have it all apart but need some slack in the cable to get those little barrel ends from their holders. Is that possible without going to the throttle body and screwing around on that end? I've tried yelling at it. Didn't help. Thoughts?
Thanks!
Bob

Edit... and how do I get this damned throttle/switch black box thing back together?? It just won't snap back into place. What the heck??

(dunno how it got cut)
BUT... the two halfs won't fit together unless you have the round pin on the lower half seated in a hole on the bar. The two halves must be fitted with the top and bottom bits needing to be mated... The two halves that need to be mated are on the the outside and front of the switchgear. It usually goes in place without fiddling once you have the the botom half round tab seated in the hole I mentioned.

As far as removing the cables... hehe If you read the instructions, it says: Step 1 - totally disassemble bike. Step 2 - put pieces in a box and remainder in the back of your pickup and drive to a Honda shop.

Seriously, it is a PAIN. Having a factory service manual is needed as well as the instructions for installing heated grips. The factory manual doesn't give you a clue as to how to remove/replace cables. Only one cable adjusts, by the way... the pull open cable. I have attached the heated grips write up which is useful. I didn't follow the instructions and loosened the locknut for the throttle cable at the bottom by removing tank and taking off the smaller and larger hoses on the left side of the bike (they keep you from getting a shot at the locknut and adjuster) as well as a couple of electrical connectors. It was awkward as I have ham fists but can be done. The little blurb in the shop manual that the heated grip instruction points to is also a MUST READ. I don't have a soft copy of the manual (bought hard copy).

Hope this helps some as you WILL NOT remove or reinstall the throttle cable otherwise.

Thanks Wired. I think the first part of your post got cut off, but I get the idea. I am installing Oxford heated grips and that part is pretty straightforward, but I figured while I was in there I would fiddle with the cables. Mistake. And then the sun went down and it got really fricking cold and I came inside to study the shop manual. Worthless, as you pointed out.
I soooo don't want to pull the tank, but if I have to, so be it. Maybe in the Spring. Late Spring. Thanks
BTW, I went to Southwest Texas State (back when it was still SWT) and spent many weekends driving around your general neighborhood looking for good music and cold beer. Found both in abundance. I miss Texas. And any road that starts with FM. Beer

And you ended up in Norther VA? I lived in MD from 83-95 when I worked for the Fed. Hated the area actually. Traffic and violence... My oldest kiddo, her hubby and 3 grandkids live in Winchester. I am still a Skins fan and am delighted they have made the playoffs... when I lived in the area, they dominated the NFL. I want to to pound the Boys tomorrow just on general principals. Here is FM1283 behing my house... my property is right over the hill on the left.

Leave the cables alone and ride that corner a few times!

Texas does know how to build and maintain a road. For those who don't know what they are looking at, that is just an average country road in Texas, with nary a pothole and a paved shoulder wide enough that a slower vehicle can (and it will) pull over and let you pass. Very civilized.

We've been in DC since '85 and I agree on all your points. Although, I have to admit that I really like the people around here. We have a place in Asheville, NC that we will retire to as soon as our daughters to get out of school. I can hardly stand the wait!
