  Bar End & Internal Weight Removal
Posted by: 2017EX_imp - 08-05-2017, 06:31 AM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (1)

I stumbled across this procedure, had not seen it before, and thought I would pass it on. Most procedures I have seen for bar end and internal weight removal talk about left grip removal to access the retaining clip release holes in order to remove the internal weight. The right ( throttle ) side only requires taking off the switch housing to slide the grip/throttle tube off, and access the clip release holes. This guy has figured out that it is possible to roll the left side grip rubber back on itself, just enough to get at the clip release holes, without removing the grip. I think if I was going to try it, I would soften and expand the rubber first by heating it with a hair dryer. I dont think it would work with old hard rubber grips. Link attached to the showing the procedure. http://www.manicsalamander.com/media/519...emoval.pdf

  Clutch Point of Engagement & Front End Vibration
Posted by: 2017EX_imp - 08-05-2017, 01:04 AM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (14)

I am no newbie to Motorcycles with 15 owned over the years, so I do not know if the two issues I have with my 2017 EX are mechanical adjustments or just getting used to a different bike. I traded in a Harley to get the EX. The Harley clutch started to grab with the lever about 1/4 inch off the grip. When I rode the EX home from the dealer, the clutch did not start to grab until the clutch lever was between 1/2 to 2/3 released. I also noticed slight up/down vibration on the front end that kicked in around 38 MPH. Back to the dealer, and dropped it off a week later, for the day. Now, my old High School motorcycle buddy has worked on every Honda imaginable over the years. He just bought a new 214 Standard. He told me he does a hydraulic flush and slave bleed every two years on his bikes, and since his new bike had sat for at least 3 years ( mine sat for about 5 months since manufacture ) he did a flush and bleed with new fluid. Afterwards, he said his clutch started to grab with the lever about 1/4 inch off the grip. I told the dealer about this. Picked my bike up and rode home. The dealers response was to set the clutch lever adjuster at the last setting, #5 ( it had been at the middle setting #3 ). The grab point has improved some, but still starts to grab at about half release of the lever. The front end up/down vibration, which is now even worse, was addressed by the dealer by setting the fork preload adjustment to the 4th ring which is even softer than the spec setting of 3rd ring on the adjuster, and letting 1 LB. of tire pressure out of both tires! I had just set both tire pressures at spec, cold the day before with a digital tire gauge. For some reason the fork preload factory setting is second ring on the adjuster for the Standard model, whereas the factory setting for my EX is the 3rd ring. So, is this a getting used to it situation, a dealer mechanic not doing the right thing, or both?

The second half of the season begins this weekend with the 4 top riders within 10 points of each other. Zarco led FP1 in the rain while Dovi took top honors in a dry FP2:

FP2 results:

2 FOLGER 0.398
3 PETRUCCI 0.419
4 ZARCO 0.530
5 BARBERA 0.532
6 REDDING 0.573
7 PEDROSA 0.601
8 CRUTCHLOW 0.629
9 A ESPARGARO 0.687
10 MARQUEZ 0.877
11 VIÑALES 0.957

Lorenzo debuted a new front fairing:

Although Ducatis and the 2 satellite Yamahas dominated FP2, the new fairing didn't seem to help Lorenzo. However he says he liked it and he may improve a lot when he gets used to it.

I placed an order today with Samurider for my new 14 CB1100.
Hi double tuck and roll seat
Black fender kit
Black mirrors
Plot fork stabilizer
This is what I determined I would need to make it as close to my old 82 900F as can be.

  How common are wheel & suspension upgrades?
Posted by: Syscrush_imp - 08-04-2017, 04:36 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

Hi all. I love the CB1100 and if I was a smart man, I would have bought one when they became available in Canada in 2013. But being a stupid man, I bought a '79 CBX instead and have spent years getting it to look and work the way I think a motorcycle should. Big Grin

In case you're interested, here's the current state:
[url=https://flic.kr/p/VFV9af][Image: 8b241de9812bb9525f360ca6b67b96d0.jpg]

Vintage CB1100F/CB1100R fans may recognize those wheels... When I bought the bike, it had those wheels and 1100F rotors and 2-piston calipers which worked quite well (although not as well as the current setup).

Anyhow, the CBX is nearly there, and I'm itching for another project. Since I don't have the resources to do another bike, I'm signed up to help a friend do something similar to what I've done with my CBX. She wants a sick CB550. So, what am I doing on a CB1100 site?

Back when I had a CB550, I daydreamed about fitting modern CB1100 wheels to it. Back then, the 1100 was not available in North America, and it was so new that nobody had stuff like wheels available.

I showed my friend a variety of wheel options, and threw the 1100 wheels into the mix out of curiosity, and as luck would have it, that was her fave! So, I'm thinking that I'd like to get my mitts on a complete CB1100 front end - wheel, axle, spacers, forks, brakes, and triples. And a rear wheel with brake rotor and caliper. We have time to wait for the right opportunity, but other than setting up an eBay alert I figured our best bet for finding the stuff we want is probably this forum.

A problem with scoring a front end is that when a bike is wrecked, some or all of the front is often a casualty, so I guess I'm hoping that someone is looking to upgrade their front end to USD forks, radial brakes, and 17" wheels and willing to sell off the old parts. Are those kinds of changes/upgrades common on these bikes, or am I living in a dreamland?

Any advice or pointers on a good source for these parts without paying through the nose at the Honda dealer would be much appreciated.

THANKS!
Banana

  cb1100RS sit rep
Posted by: Macduff_imp - 08-04-2017, 03:02 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Since I got passed the running service I've been getting more acquainted/familiar with my CB11RS.
So far my rides since the running in service have been short ones but its given me some useful indicators as to how it handles.
The Rear suspension units whilst good are probably a little under damped on rebound when loaded heavily so if hitting hard compression's they can pogo a little if provoked as they struggle to control the springs as they recoil. Front suspension hasnt shown any similar traits, though I discovered that it does need muscling to get in "scratching" and will try to stand up a little if trail braking when scrubbing off speed. Spring rates seem well matched front and rear and to the bike as a retro cafe racer , though it cruising was more your intent they may feel overly firm.
These are more observations, than criticisms and I think Honda did a good job dragging 70s/80s chassis architecture into the noughties and making it better than the hinged in the middle bikes of yesteryear. Brakes are perfectly matched, I think the engine still feels a little tight and will hopefully loosen up as the miles get added (im still under 1kmiles) .
Front brakes are meaty/powerful and easily modulated with lever pressure.

Overall i'm impressed though would say if anyone was thinking of retro fitting RS suspension bits to a EX or other CB11 I'd say the dual bending forks are a worth a thought (if your flush) but I'd look aftermarket rather than use the RS rear Showas shocks. Note there are some nice piggy back shocks available from Nitron UK. something for the wish list Smile.

The map [url=https://drive.google.com/open?id=1anXtbErVgMa820xcr_IDXXMjDkQ&usp=sharing]is here.

My wife and I are heading away for 5 weeks so there won’t be any CB time for Cormanus. I thought I’d better get one last ride in before we go. I decided on a circle of the local mountains.

It was a glorious Day and Big Willy looked imposing as I rode past.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/g58ltysfz/]

Having made my way to Samford, I turned left and headed for Mt Glorious. There’s a very steep and winding ascent and I wanted it to myself. The omens were not good.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/smf9h4nlr/]

[url=https://postimg.org/image/a30z3h3zz/]

Luckily, they both turned off.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/3o1y6sxa7/]

It’s much better when you’re not following things.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/xwk88f7un/]

[url=https://postimg.org/image/n4mntbse7/]

I had coffee (in a cup) and bacon and eggs (on a plate) at the Mt Glorious Café during which time Marc, Dani or a wannabe arrived.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/4771g2oov/]

Other chaps stood around in the sun talking wisely.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/vkgtokkn3/]

I pressed on through the bush, down the very steep Northbrook Parkway

[url=https://postimg.org/image/609y4e9vj/]

[url=https://postimg.org/image/li21lu5q7/]

Until I came to a patch of freshly resurfaced road at which point I decided to turn around.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/8rxt8qxrz/]
After a wonderful ride back up the hill, I discovered the Western Window.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/yjnqbou4f/]

[url=https://postimg.org/image/5fzifg60v/]

Marc, Dani or the wannabe was still relaxing.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/wgdb40ubj/]

More trees.
[url=https://postimg.org/image/oep2m4bjz/]

A great view east to the end of the world. Well, it is flat, isn’t it?
[url=https://postimg.org/image/rmtjz5xtr/]

And Big Willy still glowing in the early afternoon sun.

Anybody familiar with this road?
I'm looking for a pleasant way to ride from Marietta OH to SW PA, this road along the Ohio river looks tempting. Not in a hurry.
Any advice appreciated.
