Many thanks!

Just an idea.... if you still have the original that failed; mount it on the wall in the garage or shop.

I've got some of these "goodies" in the shop. They make great conversation pieces.

Here's a few examples.

Stinger exhaust for my VW. Didn't get around the block and the local policeman followed me home. Fortunately; he had a good sense of humor & was a car guy.

New remote oil filter housing. Sprayed oil everywhere after startup.
Yep, it had a casting crack, and made it on the "wall of shame".

Some where self inflicted.

Cracked the left radiator cowl on the Rune (rock?). $234 DodgyBlush

Idle mount for the Miata. Some friend were over "what the h_ _ _!"

GSXR front fender. Wasn't quite right, so I heated. Looked pretty good, but I had to do just one more spot. Darn thing got more waves in it than the Atlantic.

Love that idea. Unfortunately, K&N wants the part back for "testing" which I'm sure means someone looks at it and says "Yep, it is broken."

In better news, they are going to send me a reimbursement request for all the parts I've had to replace. So far that consists of:

- x4 quarts Lucas oil ($45.00)
- OEM replacement oil filter ($14.00)
- x2 sets of EBC brake pads ($59.00)
- Brake Cleaner ($3.00)

Total thus far: $121.00

Make sure to keep receipts on that stuff.

Done! I have a file full of receipts.

Stay far away. They sent me two new ones, but they are going in the trash.

This may be for Americans only, as there was no option to choose a Canadian Province on the e-form...

I live in PA and filled out the form. I hope something comes of this. It's inexcusable considering how dangerous a failure could potentially be. I'm glad I was going less than 10 mph on a rural road.

I warned them last year in October at the AIM EXPO about the problems people had with the filter. I use Honda OEM.

What a crock!

This problem has been going on for well over 5 years and they are only recalling certain filters made last year: March 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016

I might as well toss the two sitting on my shelf that I was afraid to use...they are at least 3 years old.

Interesting Report...K&N executives are clearly trying to cover their @r$e$ from greater liability by claiming this is only a recent fault of their filter manufacturing process.

They only made 186,000 of these filters in the specified period last year alone.
However, based on the failure claims I have been reading about, some of which are over 5 years old, there could potentially be many hundreds of thousands of filters just waiting to fail.

I mentioned the recall to my son. He, too, has two motorcycles and I wasn't sure if he used that filter. He suggested that perhaps people were using the nut to *tighten* the filter rather than just installing hand-tight. Using the nut only to *loosen* to remove the filter, where failure would not be catastrophic, may be a better procedure.

For those who have experienced this failure, do we know if the nut was used to tighten the filter upon initial installation?

I was totally unaware of this problem as a new owner of a 2014 CB 1100 purchased 2 weeks ago.
I would suggest it would be nice to have a thread or link for new owners to be aware of this problem

Most reports I have seen mention the filter being hand tight.

Supports the argument to use OEM equipment when replacing vital components. If this had happened with Honda filters, most likely there would have been a recall and owners would've been notified.

Not trying to start a debate, it's just my perspective. Big Grin

Have been following this with interest. I had an engine built for my Cobra replica and the engine builder told me to never use a Fram oil filter as they failed quite often and he wouldn't warranty the engine if I did use one. Most manufacturers have switched production off shore. I will always buy OEM for all my vehicles. They may be manufactured off shore as well but, as mentioned, before they will probably stand behind it and certainly will honour it under warranty.
