Just watched this Fortnine video while having my morning coffee.
He talks about Honda's design philosophy, and their propensity to make rolling changes to their motorcycle designs based on feedback.

Probably a good explanation of the year-to-year changes that were made on the CB1100, at least the U.S. models, like going to a six-speed, a larger tank, etc.

Observations as follows:
- chain is 6000 miles from new, no problems, no wear or visible damage
- sprockets same miles, looking perfectly fine
- sprocket mounting looks perfectly aligned, all nuts tight
- chain slack adjusted as required, hasn't changed in over 1500 miles

Now please help me explaining this.
When I measure the chain slack at different positions by rolling the bike forward (she has no center stand) the chain slack is the same in all but 2 or 3 positions. In those positions (each plus or minus 2 inches) the chain slack is reduced to under half an inch. No other observations. Adding plenty of oil and let it sit hasn't solved the problem.

I cannot figure any scenario {other than visible damage to the rear sprocket) which could cause such strange measurements. And I have a hard time ditching a good chain without a plausible explanation.

Has anybody seen similar ?

Well, it was 3 years ago today 6-22-21 That I picked up my new 2021 NC 750X DCT that I affectionately came to name Angry Bird after seeing it's shadow in the sun while riding, due to the little curved beak under the headlight.



Since that time we have managed to rack up 45,802 miles after this morning's 51-mile ride



Got to admit, at first I wasn't so sure that it would be a long-term relationship. My 2 previous bikes were a Honda ST 1300 which I put 110,000 miles on and a Yamaha FJR I had put 38,400 miles on. I also still have my CB 1100 DLX which I have put 75,000 miles on and will never part with. I was used to big smooth bikes and big power. The NC 750 seemed rather anemic power wise, and shuddered like one of the cylinders was misfiring due to the 270 degree "character" designed into the motor. However, I fell in love with the light weight and the unbelievably brilliant DCT trans. I have since gotten used to the power which I find very acceptable for my daily rides. I have even toured out of state on it, and it did an admirable job. I also love the gas mileage. I average about 74 mpg. I have added Oxford heated grips (and run handlebar muffs in the winter), a frunk knob, a digital thermometer, a T-Rex luggage rack, a tail bag, some fork guards, a Helmet Guardian, and a Battery Tender Jr pigtail. I run a Givi touring shield in the winter and on trips and a cut down stock shield in the summer.

So far, no issues. One time a year or so ago the MIL light came on, but a few hours later when I started it, the light went right out as normal and hasn't come on since. Once I found a small bug crawling around in my instruments. He must have died in there since I only saw him the one day lol. Other than that, the bike has proven to be extremely durable and reliable (knock on wood)

Looking at my service records I have changed the oil 6 times (It's due again in another 1,000 miles) with Honda GN4 10W30. Have changed the oil filter and DCT filter 3 times (They will also be changed in 1,000 miles).

I have gone thru 6 sets of tires, the original Metzler Tourance, 2 sets of Pirelli Angel GT's, a set of Shinko Raven 09's, and 2 sets of Michelin R5's, and just yesterday ordered another set of Michelins R5's to go on in about 1,000 miles as the current set is at 7,602 miles and they are getting close to the wear bars. Hopefully will get me thru next week. They might make 8500 miles.

I'm on my 3rd set of front brakes and second set of rear brakes.

On my second air cleaner and second set of spark plugs.

Just had the valves inspected and they are still in spec.

I've had the front and rear brake fluids changed twice, and the coolant fluid changed once.

I'm on my third chain, and second set of sprockets.

(I'm always amazed at how labor/parts intensive motorcycles are compared to cars. At this mileage on my wife's Highlander I think we had changed the oil 4 times but everything else was still original incl brakes and tires.)

Anyhow Angry Bird has wormed it's way into my heart, and I plan on riding it until 100K miles (approx 3 1/2 more years)... or.... I quit riding, whichever comes first (in 3 1/2 years I'll be 77 and most likely done but you never know.....)

This relates to another bike. Ok, a bicycle. With our efforts to get healthy this year, Mrs. G mentioned a few days ago that we should get our bikes cleaned up and roadworthy and start pedalling again.

Our bicycles have been hanging from the ceiling in the garage from pulleys for the past several years. My Trek commuter bike was new in 2006, so I did some research to see what the new version of my bike is, and what technological improvements have been made in 18 years. Ok, disc brakes, lighter materials, stuff like that. And it's on sale for a thousand bucks.

Putting my El Cheapo hat on, I figured I could find one or two of those on FB Marketplace for a bit cheaper. Turns out I found plenty of them. Peculiar that there are several listings on Facebook and Offer-up for the same bike... 2022 Trek FX3, size medium, in Galactic Grey. All in the same region of Southern California, shown either as "Still in the factory box" or "Brand new, no miles". All for close to or at half of what they cost new. One listing says "I have ten of them new in the box."

Sound suspicious? I thought so. Did a little digging to see if a container of these bikes went missing somewhere in our area.

Perhaps... This article says that a container of them was lost in 2022, either at sea near the Port of L.A. or maybe sometime afterwards. The railroad that would have taken them away from the port is named.

I have been messing with Microsoft's AI design generator (free) and asked it to come up with some 2045 designs of the CB1100EX in a dystopian era or a 15th Century Japan era and so on. It came up with some interesting interpretations. Some of them are six cylinder too! The most "normal" designs are actually from 25th century Japan? I did take the word dystopian out of that one though.The imagination on this is endless, great fun too...some examples.

Yesterday was the saddest Father's Day in my 84 years. Saturday night at 2300, my daughter called with news that her first cousin's seventeen year old son had been in a bad accident and was paralyzed from the neck down and on life-support. He died at about 0730, Sunday morning.
Cael Penney was a wonderful kid. He was with friends riding a dirt-bike with a friend on the back and hit a pot-hole, throwing them both over the front of the bike, where he landed on his head and broke his neck. EMS arrived in about 20 minutes and transported him to the hospital where he was on life-support until he died the next morning. Our entire family is devastated. It was a freak accident, one of those things you just can't believe happened so quickly.
I wanted to start this thread to honor Cael and to have a place for others to honor someone if the occasion arose.
