Having spent a morning on some domestic administration and crawling down a few YouTube rabbit hole, I decided to go for a ride. The CB1100 needed some exercise.

It was an unremarkable ride. I went around a loop I ride frequently, although this time in reverse — anti-clockwise as you look at the map. I also rode out through Lowood for a change and, although I didn't end up at Esk via back roads as I intended, I made a stop at the Wivenhoe Dam lookout. The Wivenhoe dam supplies Brisbane with water and also contains a small hydro-electric generator. The water shooting out of the spillway not only powers the dam, but also, I think, keeps the Brisbane River flowing.

After admiring the dam, I rode back over the Brisbane Range — always a treat – and got very hot in badly congested afternoon traffic. It's summer down under.

I stopped for petrol at Fernvale and was delighted to read on the enormous sign that I would be able to drive through* coffee.

A note:Every now and again I look back at a past chronicle and the photos have disappeared. Or I wonder what will become of the forum. So, I've been transferring my ride reports to a site I control. It's a slow process: I get all excited and do a few posts, then lose interest and it languishes. Or I decide to change the format or the template, or I learn more about organising things and start fiddling which means I have to go back and modify what I've done.

In early October, my company announced that it will be shutting down, and I'm part of a skeleton crew shutting down through the end of the year. I've been searching for a job during that time, and have a very nice offer in my inbox as of last night to start in January.

Here's the interesting part as far as the commute. For the past 20 years, I have ridden 12.5 miles each way daily, traversing two major freeways. I can use car pool lanes and lane split as needed. All in all, not bad. Plus, the job has afforded me the ability to store a third motorcycle at work.

The new job is 60 miles away from home, but I can work remotely four days per week and commute to the office one day. So, the mileage will be about equal overall. The new commute will put me on a guarded toll lane of a busy freeway for about 2/3 of the ride. Motorcycles can use the toll lanes for free, so I'll basically be on a Hotwheels track for that distance coming and going. I can rotate between my three bikes for that trek. Eventually if the job really works out, it might make sense to trade out one of the bikes for something more suited for long-distance touring.

I can't store a motorcycle as it is an office without a shop space, but thankfully I can fit all three bikes in my garage. Tight fit, but it will work. I can never own anything larger than a Fiesta to make it work, but I have no plans to get another car.

Should be good! Hopefully...

This past weekend will probably be my last longer ride of the year. From Vancouver I rode to Horseshoe Bay for the 2ish hour ferry trip in to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, then a quick 1 hour ride up island in the rain. Returned December 1 (can’t believe I’m still riding in December) in the cold (5 Celsius) but dry conditions

In hopes of riding for another 40 years, I am in the process of upgrading all my motorcycle gear to take advantage of technology advances. I have purchased an airbag vest, riding jeans, boots, gloves, and helmet.

Tonight, I am sharing what I have learned about my new airbag vest. There are some who claim it can be as impactful as wearing a DOT certified helmet. I am inclined to agree.

I picked the Alpinestars Air-Tech 5 Airbag System because it protects my shoulders, chest, ribs and back. I have always worn a great jacket with AA rated body armor, but the airbag vest offers far superior coverage. In some instances, 18 times more protection.



I also picked the Alpinestars Air-Tech 5 because I can pair it with my existing motorcycle jackets. I find most motorcycle jackets to be either too loud stylistically or ill fitting. I already have a sizeable investment in abrasion protection and jackets. I wanted to augment that with state-of-the-art airbag capability.

I took advantage of the Black Friday sale to purchase my Air-Tech 5 for $650.

The Air-Tech 5 uses 3 gyroscopes and 3 accelerometers to monitor my position relative to the motorcycle and the road. A crash algorithm leverages that data and some AI to accurately monitor when to deploy the airbag when a crash begins. It deploys the airbag in 20 milliseconds. Scenarios include being rear-ended by a car, sliding on the motorcycle, striking something while riding, being struck by a car at an intersection, lane change mishaps, etc. In essence, if my position changes in a bad way on the motorcycle or I separate from the motorcycle, the airbag will deploy. I can set the algorithm to Street or Race:



Firmware can also be updated using the App and the Internet Connectivity from your cell phone:



I charge the unit using a micro-USB cable. Once fully charged, I have 30 hours of riding time:





The vest is activated when I (1) put it on and (2) zip it up. The vest will not activate unless it is fully zipped and charged. Display lights on the vest illuminate when it is booting up and when it is ready for me to ride.



I can also use my phone to connect to the vest via Bluetooth and monitor status and disarm the vest:



When I unzip my vest, the vest is disarmed.



Today, I went for an 18-mile ride and wore the vest for the first time. I took the armor out of my favorite jacket except for the elbow armor.



The vest is light, and the combination of the vest and my jacket are similar in weight to my jacket with good armor. It felt “different” because the back plate is more substantial, but it was not uncomfortable. Just different. I suspect I will become accustomed to it in time.

On my ride, I tested the following real-world scenarios to see if I could cause the vest to “misfire:”

* Quick acceleration onto an on-ramp
* Quick acceleration on the highway
* Quick stop on the side of the road
* Abrupt stop on a city street
* Twisty turn with significant lean
* Urban motorcycle driving basics (modest acceleration, stop light, etc.)

I am pleased to report that at no time did the airbag deploy and turn me into the Michelin man.

I hope my first experience with an airbag vest held your interest and may lead you to consider possibilities.
