  Weak Crank Case Bolts?
Posted by: bertypower_imp - 09-07-2020, 02:10 AM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (19)

Hey guys, 2nd post on here. Here goes. When I buy a used bike I usually go over everything nuts bolts etc. Long story short. Got a great deal on a well maintained, garage kept CB1100, with a healthy amount of aftermarket parts, Two brothers M2, Bar Risers, Maintenance Manual, New tires etc. The owner used synthetic oil. The only flaw in the bike is that he did have a tip-over in the garage and scratched the left side crank case cover. No biggie...

Upon inspection everything seemed fine test drove and bought it. So I put a couple Hundred miles on the bike in the next few days. Noticed some seepage on the right Head-gasket covers (silver round bits) and the right side crankcase cover (smaller one). So I went over them with my ratchet and could tighten the 8mm bolts by hand pretty easily. So I got the torque wrench out and torqued the 8mm bolts to the manuals spec. 22nm /16ft. Lbs. When I went to the left side, I had significant seepage. Not enough to cause a drop to the floor, but enough... I tightened them by hand with my ratchet wrench first. However I could turn almost all bolts without even trying. So snugged em all up. But snapped the lowest bolt without even trying. Managed to get the broken screw out and replaced it with one of the higher most bolts. I had a M6x25 laying round so I used it as a temporary replacement. Ordering the Set of M6x28 tonight.

Today I felt like I should get the bolts to at least 10ftlbs. The 2nd lowermost bolt almost snapped. I managed to get it out and looks like this screw was going to snap at the same place... discarded. Replaced with another higher bolt, Hand/ratchet tightened. Torqued to a low 5ish ft pounds.

Top bolts by the chrome circles. Were tightened by wrench and ratchet only. But just tight. I didn’t crank it down or anything. Seepage seems to have stoped there.

So I’m thinking that the impact from the tip-over weakened those bolts or slightly bent them making them weaker than the rest. Honestly all those bolts seem pretty weak to me both right and left side. So I think I’m going to order all new 8mm bolts for the left side and right side crank case. Are there gaskets for that? Or is it just RTV or whatever?

Lastly, the synthetic seems pretty thin to me. I’ll probably go back to the manuals recommendations. Never had a seepage problem on any of my other Honda’s I’ve owned. (CB500X /CB300R/Rebel300) but I only used the recommended oil at the dealer. Honda oil I guess.

I’m pretty mechanically savvy (by no means a mechanic.) but I will probably take it to a mechanic for the work. I just want to get the bike up and running leak free. Valve Checks are due soon so I’ll just knock it all out.

Any info or recommendations would be awesome. Thanks!

  Retirement

Hi Forum friends. I have been absent for the last month. Just retired after 34 years as an educator in the Lone Star State. Been too hot to ride much, and it has been a lot more work than I could have imagined. Trying to clean out a room I have taught out of for 16 years! I also bought a 1980 Suzuki GS750E that needs a little work on the calipers before I ride it. http://cb1100forum.com/forum/images/smilies/biker.gif Hey, I think I might have time now! Also planning on picking up a really nice 1982 Suzuki GS1100E that needs NO work done to it or on it.
Will show the Forum both when they are presentable, or in the case of the 1100, in my possession. Anyone out there have much thoughts about either one of these 'old' bikes? Going back to the carb days. The 750 fires right up, after I pull the Choke knob. I forgot all about that kind of stuff. I guess I am going forward in time with my life, and backwards with my bikes. Trying to re-live my youth again, and ride bikes I can actually 'work' on.
I will have many questions for all of you soon. Thanks for already being there, Michael in way TOO hot south Texas.

  Impressions

My new 2013 CB1100 arrived last night. I got up early this morning and aired up the tires (they were in the twenties). I hit the gas station and topped off the tank and rode about 125 miles today, out into the desert in the heat.
I was really impressed. Smooth, nimble, sporty. It was so easy to ride. 60 mph was my happy place and there were very few cars on the road this morning so I had it all to myself. Later I opened it up but was really enjoying the scenery from the upright position.
I did perceive the so-called "flat spot" in the powerband when I accelerated fairly hard around 3K rpm. Nothing major, but climbing a steep, windy grade I could tell it was there. I'm also thinking that this motor might still be wearing in as it has only 3,000 miles. But it is buttery smooth, quiet, and likes the many bends we have in this area. So pleased to have joined the CB scene.

  Rust on tank from crash
Posted by: calipo223_imp - 09-06-2020, 02:44 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

Hello fellow CB riders. Last summer I had a little crash and my tank got dented and scraped. I have some surface rust now. Can you recommend a product that would help remove some surface rust on my tank. Thank You in advance. Calipo

  Digital Clock Faulty?
Posted by: bertypower_imp - 09-05-2020, 04:19 PM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (21)

Hi there! Greetings from Music City. I just bought a used CB1100 2013 from another forum member here. Everything’s working as it should. On my test ride I noticed that the digital clock was missing the 2nd minute counter. It would be kind of intermittent showing time like 1:4 , instead of 1:40. Sometimes part of the 2nd number would show 1:4- for 1:43 etc.

The bike is amazing so that little issue didn’t deter me from owning the bike. But I just thought I’d post it here. If it’s an easy fix or a cheap part that needs replaced that would be awesome. If it’s going to be a big deal, I’m happy with it as is.

Thanks for your help!

When it’s too hot to ride

We’re very dry and in the low-100’s today and tomorrow. Since I try to be ATGATT, these temps are too uncomfortable for me and I tend to leave the bikes parked. How about you? Do you compromise your riding gear for the sake of comfort, or do you gear up anyway and just deal with it?

Seat height for 5'9" around 30" inseam?
Posted by: Gilstrak_imp - 09-04-2020, 03:39 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (31)

Hey gang

I'm 5'9" around 30" inseam and looking at getting a 2013 cb1100. There are not any stock bikes in my area, but one listed for reasonable shipping. I sat on a modified cb1100 cafe racer custom to judge the weight, but it had modified suspension and was quite tall for my comfort. Anyone with similar proportions with a stock model able to comment on the seat height? Did you do any mods to help? Last thing I want to do is tip toe 500+ lbs around in a parking lot and drop it when I slip. Also anyone able to comment on occasional 2up trips with 3-5 in seat times? Thanks for the comments looking forward to reading them and crossing my fingers for good news.

  New Tyres - new noises!
Posted by: ElevenForty_imp - 09-03-2020, 07:52 PM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (25)

Hi all,

Just had new tyres (TIRES!!) and inner tubes mounted to my CB. Bridgestone Battlax T31. Standard 18" sizes front and rear. I now have a lot of noise coming from the front wheel at all speeds over 15mph. Sounds like a bad wheel bearing but at a constant frequency. I checked it all out and reinstalled both wheels to correct procedure. Wheels spin freely, no brake calliper binding. Checked out chain slack - fine. Bike has 6000 miles and had no such noise on original Dunlops (which I didn't really like) T31's in this size are designed to be used with or without tubes as required. I am now 200 miles in on the new rubber so they should be scrubbed in.

I removed front mudguard and went for a spin. Noise still there albeit not as intrusive so ruled out excessive resonating between tyre and mudguard. I have a road comet nose cone fitted so I will remove that next to repeat the experiment.

Anyone else have similar problems after fitting new tyres? Anything obvious about the front or rear axles I may have missed out?

Some pictures of older bikes I've seen at the local mechanics in the past couple of weeks. The Z1000 was in beautiful condition.

  Honda Trail 125
Posted by: Roper_imp - 09-03-2020, 11:59 AM - Forum: Other Bikes - Replies (53)

This just might be my next motorcycle purchase. My very first motorcycle ride ever was on a Trail 90 on my uncle's dairy farm in Jerome, Idaho. It was 1974. I was 7 years old. That began a lifelong relationship with Honda motorcycles.
