  This bike slows me down
Posted by: Olof_imp - 09-14-2020, 08:48 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (61)

So, this post contains nothing new for you guys but I figure I’d share anyway: Four decades of frustrated speeding, overtaking and filtering has suddenly come to a stop, or so it seems. A string of Euro sportsbikes ended when I traded my R NineT Racer for a CB1100RS. Unsure why, maybe a nostalgic notion, but the great looks certainly played a part. The first week I seriously questioned my sanity – this lumbering barge with rubber band acceleration, zero wind protection and without gadgets was so not me. And two overdrive gears, what were they thinking? I spent the second week sifting through hundreds of posts and pages on performance mods. The third week I began to shortshift, exploring the range below 3000 rpm, steering through the pegs. To my surprise, I started to relax, ease up and enjoy the scenery more. A gap in traffic no longer equals overtaking; the need for speed is gone. Now I’m more impressed by this bike than I ever thought I’d be – it’s simply brilliant straight from the crate. No mods needed. This bike slows me down and it feels good. Never ever thought I’d say that.

  Tank Bag
Posted by: cbolling_imp - 09-14-2020, 12:24 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (14)

I am thinking about getting a tank bag. I have never had one before but with the limited hard bag options for the CB I am considering it. Anyone else use one? If so, what type and what should I know before buying one?

  Synthetic Oil smell?
Posted by: bertypower_imp - 09-13-2020, 09:48 AM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (2)

I just finished replacing my crankcase cover seals, and noticed a faint smell of maybe varnish or whatever when I was doing the left side. Didn't think much of it (oil looked normal just like it does outa the bottle not milky or mixed).

Since I had some time on my hands today I thought I would just open the oil filler cap and get a sniff. At first I thought it was gas, but its more of a varnish type smell than a fuel smell.

I don't notice a smell at all in my garage or anything, only when putting the cap up to my nose or right at the filler hole.
So I do not think its an issue. Just more of a curiosity really.

I also own another bike (W800) that is run on conventional oil and noticed a smell as well, altho not as "potent" I guess. but I haven't ridden that bike in a few days.

So the question is: For those of you guys that run synthetic Honda oil, what does your filler cap smell like after you've ridden a few hundred miles...

I've never really run a motorcycle on synthetic. I bought mine used and the previous owner used the Honda Synthetic. So I guess I'll keep it at that.

Thx!

Let's see your first real riding jacket.
Posted by: whizzle_dizzler_imp - 09-13-2020, 09:33 AM - Forum: Riding Gear - Replies (21)

Being a bit of a gear-head like many other motorcyclists, hording collecting all sorts of different gear is part of the fun of being a motorcyclist.

I was reorganizing the garage today, and pulled from a pile of gear, the first riding jacket I ever bought. It's an Alpinestars something or the other, size 38 US. I bought off eBay for $180 in 2007 when I had my R6, and used it every winter when I needed something a little heavier and non perforated. Anyway, I was 5'6" 150lbs when I bought it. I can still fit it now at 180lbs, but without back and chest armor, so it's getting retired.

It's been through a highside, many rains, many rides, but I will never get rid of it.

Here she is. Let's get nostalgic and post yours up too.

  Summer/Fall 2020 Adventure v2
Posted by: bflint - 09-13-2020, 09:23 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (56)

So, I didn't get to do Summer 2020 Adventure v1 because of stuff (Thread: http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=15549). Looking to do a Sep 21 thru Oct 9 ride instead. I have moto'ed thru 29 of 48 US States and have devised 2 trip routes I could do this and next year to get the remaining 21 ... dum or fun, not sure but its something to do. One route is a southern route and one is a northern route although they both have Minnesota in them (missed it last year while in Dakotas ... stupid me). Both have Maryland,Virginia,Michigan because have friends/relatives there)
*
Any forum thoughts on which route would be preferred for this time of year (strange year that it is)? Guesstimate that I have to do 483 miles/day on average. Both routes have Bing Maps link below.

Has anybody seen these characters in use?
I have OEM heated grips and I haven't noticed that the number 3 symbol was illuminated at all.
Maybe they are badly connected?
What about 2 and 4 ?

  New Battery or charge/tend old
Posted by: satchit - 09-13-2020, 02:32 AM - Forum: Mechanical & Technical - Replies (7)

I've had my CB1100 for just over 5 years now. I primarily used it to commute to work. I've been working from home for some months now, and only take short rides(~10 mins) on the weekends.
The bike hesitated to start last weekend - but did start. It did not start today and the clock was reset. I charged the battery(took less than an hour) - and the bike started and I took it for a short ride.
The questions I have are...
1. Are my short rides causing the battery to lose charge?
2. If the answer to question 1 is yes - would I see the same behavior if I put in a new battery?

I do not know when my work situation will change - so am wondering whether I should get a new battery or just charge/tend the old one.

When you think it's to far to ride to the rally in PA you punish yourself by not riding Sat AM and rearranging all your gear, helmets boots, jackets and oil changing supplies [Image: 1dcbe43132e4f7174e295e925cd44cbe.jpg]

  Riding App

I'm looking for an app (free preferably but not opposed to paying a little) that lets you create a route then have it "playback" via bluetooth with my Sena. I, of course, can use my Google Maps app but you cannot pick your own route (I think).

Any suggestions?
