I met up with a mate and ran the coro loop today, those of you that have been to NZ may have ridden it.

The Coromandel Loop is pretty famous here in NZ, iconic coastal and mountain roads blessed with twisty tarmac and spectacular scenery.



We left Tauranga at about 7am, over the Kaimai Ranges, up through the Old Te Aroha Rd to Thames. These are really nice bush and farm roads but the fun was just beginning.

From there its up the west coast to Coromandel Town, narrow winding roads through some of the most beautiful scenery, with the Hauraki Gulf on one side and the Coromandel Ranges on the other.

From Coro town we blasted over the ranges to Kuaotunu, this epic stretch of road is very winding with excellent views from the summit across both coasts.

After a few kms along the surf beach, we headed down the east coast to Whangamata, once again the ride is rail to rail with spectacular ocean and mountain views.

We stopped for lunch with another mate at the Smashed Pipi at Whanga, before heading 130km down the east coast home again.

All up it was about 500km of mostly carving, and with a few stops along the way took us about 8hrs.

I had big plans of taking heaps of photos, but only took one in the end... next time maybe

Man, it's been over three years since I've been on here, so you can guess why...I gotta problem. I stil recognize some of those grizzled veterans, so I'm confident y'all can help. My sad story

Awhile ago, I'm taking her out of my garage (straddling and paddling a three point turn to get headed properly). Get pointed in the right direction, hit the starter and nada. Darn! dead battery. Oh well, so I have to paddle back. As I am, my foot slips and the bike does a slow motion drop. FIRST time I've dropped it! Actually, more of a set down so no damage was done. Given the slippery nature of the garage floor, it was a bit of a struggle getting her back up. I hook up the tender and she sits for a couple of weeks until I try to take her out again. Starts up fine; however there is about an inch of slop in the throttle. I adjust as much as I can at the throttle but still have 3/8"+ of play. Far too much. I know you can adjust at the engine, but it looks like a painful process requiring specialized tools. More importantly, I wonder if in my dropping and wrestling to right her, the cable was pulled from it's proper path. So, 1) is my guess of the cable no longer being routed properly correct? If so, any pics or thoughts on where it may have gone awry? or 2) do I need to adjust at the engine and, of so, any pics and help on how to accomplish that or 3) is the cable just strestched ot the point it needs to be replaced?

Since it too cold to ride figured I'd start on my face lift,hood to be done by summer. I got the Gull Craft fairing and decided to change it a bit. I started by putting together a shape I liked out of clay and then pull a fiberglass mold off that,hope to have the fairing ready to primer in 2 weeks.

I had meant to mention this a while back and then forgot, only to be reminded once more upon seeing the ferret's sad post regarding the death of Joel Robert. At any rate, after acquiring a new (to me) dedicated film scanner last year I finally went through a bunch of my old slides containing images from a few of the National AMA motocross races as well as a couple of the Trans-AMA series events that took place back in the late 1970's. I was actually taking race pictures before then, but hadn't yet purchased a 35mm camera so unfortunately most of my resulting images during the mid-70's were total crap as a result. All in all I'm glad that I took the time to scan these and post them up for others to enjoy.

It was fun reading memories shared by other fans and I even got some "likes" from The Man himself (Roger De Coster) which was pretty cool. There were comments added by a few of the racers from that era as well as the folks from the RedBud motocross park where many of the images were taken which was nice. Those of you who were motocross fans back in the 1970's might enjoy checking these out. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I spent so much time posting the images up on Instagram that I'm just not up to going through the whole process again here.

It's a point and shoot, but with a nice 40x optical zoom. My I-phone 6 takes decent enough photos, but I found myself wanting something a bit more to capture shots of my CB1100. I'm about 50% sure of a long trip this summer and I figured a new camera would nudge that certainty up to at least 60, maybe even 70%.

Which means I had to test it out on my CB1100. Which means I had to give it a chain cleaning and then wash n wax from head to toe so that it would presentable.

With my I-phone, Mt. Hood just tended to appear as a tiny white mound in the distance with this same distance / angle, but this is much better:

I wash my bike good 2x per year, sometimes skipping the spring cleaning. When I do go at it, I tend to go overboard and clean in / around / up n down, sideways...probably takes 4-5 hours after degreasing, cleaning chain, prewash, wipe down, re-wash with soap and warm water, spong-bath like, blow dry then shammie dry, then remove mini scratches and swirls, then wax. It's all just vanity, but I do enjoy it--never feels like a chore. It was pretty filthy from a number of Nov / Dec rain rides, but I don't mind the time with the bike. Gives me a chance to re-acquaint myself with its inner beauty and the chance to look things over good.



The camera's macro can get about 1 cm away. I think I may have missed a spot on that chain.

The pipes were gross...carcasses from last June mixed with those from fall...ugh. Some very fine steel wool and wd-40 made quick work of the goo. Feels like a new bike...keeps me from looking : )

Fun little camera. Size of the phone, but twice as thick. Buttons are a bit too small, but as I get familiar I hope to do some nice shots. I am no camera expert, but it's nice to have something a bit "more". I find myself pouring over maps of the northern states. Never been to North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin. I'm hopeful.
