In another section of the forum, I've just reported on the slightly unwilling purchase of a set of Michelin PR3s


Now I've found a problem with them after only a few minutes. Let me share it with you.

It has been a truly glorious autumn day here in south-east Queensland. The sky has been clear, the sun has shone, the light has a clarity that we see only in the cooler months. It's cool in the morning and not too hot during the day. Indeed, it is just about the best possible weather for riding motorcycles.

So the PR3s were fitted and the helpful chap at the dealers who organised it and fitted me in reminded me that I had to be careful for a while while they were 'scrubbed in'. I think that's the term. I thought a 50 km or so burn up the highway on the way home would warm them up a bit and help the process along. So I set out for home and the chores that await me.

Do you know that those wretched tyres would just not take me there? They took me across the highway, up on to the range, along the top of the range and then down the other side until I came to the oft mentioned Bellbird Creek Tea House just in time for an excellent bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich and a cup of Earl Grey tea. The sandwich was generous on a very tasty focaccia roll and the tea was good too. I sat in the sun, ate and read a little before heading home. Again those new tyres refused to take me the quickest way and I had to endure a pleasant country ride with a final burst down the highway to get them nice and warm.

If the truth be told the whole experience was probably improved by feeling the need to be careful on new tyres and riding a bit more slowly than I might otherwise have.

The right hand (easterly) route on the map, directly from A-F was my intention; the left-hand or westerly route was where these tyres took me.

Please don't say I didn't warn you.

Today was an uncommonly sunny and clear day (even for south Florida) temperatures in the low 80's and very little humidity. I have had my filter and my 10W30 (semi synthetic) on standby for that 4000 mile service to come around. So this morning at 10 A.M I decided to push things along.

I headed south on the Florida Turnpike until I hit U.S 1 (Florida City) and continued down past Isla Morada in the Florida Keys. After a stop for refreshment and food I headed back home to Boca Raton. Not only was I going to break the 4000 mile barrier but I was going to try out my new Joe Rocket mesh jacket. Heading south I had left the waterproof liner in place. Florida even in the Springtime is too hot for this liner. I took it off on the northbound trip and felt much more comfortable with the ventilation offered by the jacket. Got back to Boca some 4 hours after departure with a very sore rump (I need to find something to remedy this) and 4,003 on the odometer. Tomorrow morning the CB 1000 is getting an oil change!

I don't know if it's all in my mind or does this bike enjoy longer trips? The sound of this engine at 75 miles an hour makes everything good with the world. On exiting the Turnpike in Boca gentleman in his 50's rolled his window down at the light and asked, "Where did you buy the rear carrier?" Well, he ignores my beautiful baby and goes for the carrier instead. That's ok this 1100 and I have a date in the my garage. Why would I go through all this trouble just to do an oil change? Because I can! Tonight before going to bed I will sit next to her (I have a rocking chair next to her in the garage) and will go over tomorrows activities. But I have that funny feeling deep inside that she already knows the game plan. I haven't felt this good since I was thirteen years old.

It was soooo nice here today and Jane suggested I take her for a ride on the DLX. I found her an old helmet I had upstairs as both of hers are on the Cape (She made me say that because she does have nice helmets) anyways we had a great ride, hardly any traffic. This is Brant Point Lighthouse,

As I rode a K model the last 20 years, I still like the concept of a flying brick.

I am trying to find out how to clean the aluminum wheels on my CB. I also have a VTX1800F that has ugly aluminum rims and need to be cleaned. Are the wheels clear coated or can I use something like a Mother product without damaging them? Any products out there that will help me?

So, I'm thinking about ordering some new headers / racing collectors that would match my arrow head exhaust.

Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated? I figured I might as stay with arrow since I purchased the slip ons and I love the sound/ look / performance of them. and they are compatible vs buying a full system.

I was busy cleaning ceiling fans and chandeliers as instructed by the note left by my wife when the call came from Salesman Steve. He had a couple hour window for a ride and wanted to know if I was up to it. Pfft are you kidding?. ..cleaning chandeliers or riding? Meet you down at the UDF in 30 minutes my man.

Since he had limited time I suggested the route thru the rebuilt wooden bridge over to the lake and then take the long way home on some nice curvy back roads I know... very few straights, not much traffic and lots of curves (incl one fairly technical road I'm not too fond of, that he had never ridden).

We were riding old school, the CB1100 and ZRX, both had Inline 4 motors, dual rear shocks and round gauges. Great bikes for these roads.

A hard left/right hander on the technical road. You can see I'm already heading right while right behind me Steve is mid turn left. Steve liked the road a lot. (too much braking and shifting for me on this road)

After getting back to the cut off point where he went one way and I went another, I glanced down at my gauges and realized I had just been on the devils ride with Salesman Steve.

There are a lot of smart people on this forum and I was hoping that some knew of backpressure and other details when it comes to exhaust.

I am thinking of taking my 4 into 1 and making it 4 individual pipes, two on each side of the bike.. If I run straight pipes all the way back with some simple baffle inserts, does that affect much?? Or will it simply just kick butt..
