Just gonna post pictures for now. A couple days off at the cabin, a few messages from people who know, and I was good to go.

While on vacation here in New England, today we happened to be near the [url=http://owlshead.org/]Owls Head Transportation Museum on the mid-coast of Maine. This museum was packed full of antique machinery including planes, automobiles and motorcycles. I spent some time talking with a young man that was working there on a paid internship after volunteering for 8 years. He spent most of his time at the museum maintaining the motorcycles on display. He told me that was studying antique automotive restoration back in Kansas (I believe he said that it was the only one of its kind to offer a four year degree in this particular field of study). Listening to his experiences with the old bikes turned out to be both entertaining and educational. I'm having a problem uploading images to my personal website for hosting purposes so for now I'm posting these photos as attachments and will edit later on if I get the chance. No modern retro motorcycles here, just some genuine machines from days gone by.

(The Vincent Black Shadow was notable because it is on loan to the museum each year, but only for part of the year as the individual who owns apparently still enjoys riding it. I'm guessing that any day now it will be back on the open road. What a great site that would be.)

My wife used to ride with me back in high school. I guess if she wanted to date me, she had too since I didn't own a car. Fast forward 40 years, and after getting used to cars... she's not interested in riding on 2 wheels other than the occasional ride on our bicycles. However, after talking about the possibility of a 'Rally Down Under' or a 'Rally Out West', she's interested in going if we can rent a CanAm or a Trike. Actually, she's even suggested that we sell one of our bikes, or boat, and buy a CanAm or Trike. So here's my question... actually questions. 1. Does anyone have a similar experience where the wife wouldn't ride with them on 2 wheels but would after they rented or bought a 3 wheeled machine? 2. Are CanAm's or Trikes available for rent? Here and/or Austrailia? I'm intrigued by her request... she wouldn't even put the top down on her convertible, but now might be open to riding at least on 3 wheels.

This must be the new normal. We've always had the Loud Pipes Save Lives crowd, but today I witnessed three different riders on ADV-style bikes, no helmet, shorts, t-shirt, with at least 3 sets of auxiliary LED lights fully ablaze. I'm all for being conspicuous, but come on guys, if you're so concerned about your safety that you need to blind oncoming drivers with an array of aftermarket lights (in the daytime!), at least wear a frickin' helmet and proper riding gear for Pete's sake. Same goes to you Loud Pipes guys. Rant over.

I like riding this motorcycle a lot, I mean obsessively a lot.
I have needed new tires for a while now. Apparently I don't have the willpower to stop riding.
So yesterday I removed the wheels and tires to keep from making excuses to continue to ride (like I'm just going around town).
I will be able to get new ones around the first of July.
Anyone else have to do something like this to keep themselves in check?

My dear friends of a good ride,

as some already know, I became a proud owner of a roadcrafter recently. Well, there is no dealership selling roadcrafters here in Germany, so I had to import it myself.

Now we want to get friends and what's better than to invite him to a ride.

So I started last Friday evening about 6 pm at home


to meet some of my friends at our regular place to get sent on the road


After a ride of 350 km, partly thru a really hefty thunderstorm with rain and wind I never had experienced in my whole life before, we arrived at about 12 pm in Oberstdorf, where I had booked a room in a hotel.

Early in the morning at 7 am I started at the gas station of Oberstdorf to show my roadcrafter some parts of Germany. We visited the southmost point of Germany,


then the most eastern point of Germany,


and the most western point of Germany


to finish at the most northern point of Germany. As you can see, it's already dawn there at 4:36am.



Here I rest this Sunday to continue my journey tomorrow. However, first thing tomorrow morning is to get new tires, which I already ordered at a local dealer here in the north German town Flensburg.

Overall this was a ride of 2,598 km. If there are no issues with certification by IBA Germany, this will be in one ride:
a BB2500K (Bun burner 2500 km in 36 hours),
a SS2000K (Saddle sore 2000 km in 24 hours)
and a 4 Corners (visit 4 corners of Germany in a SS2000K).

Well, the roadcrafter and me really became friends on this ride.

Noticed oil seeping from the left side of the valve cover. Not much. Hmm, also the bottom of the engine had a few areas that appeared to be leaks. But not so.

I slightly overfilled the oil (sight glass was not accurate until after a long ride) by about six ounces and didn't correct it until I'd put a couple hundred miles on the bike.

Now it's correct but I just noticed this leakage. Turns out it was due to the overfill. Pushed its way into the airbox and leaked around the plug in the clear drain tube (synthetic will do that), dribbled down along some areas of the case, and looked serious.

Must have also pooled a bit in the left side of the camshaft area and seeped out when the bike was on the sidestand.

No seeping from the right.

Make sure if you have any "leaks" that you have not overfilled your crankcase and that your airbox water drain is not dribbling.
