Bright Lights Save Lives
#1
This must be the new normal. We've always had the Loud Pipes Save Lives crowd, but today I witnessed three different riders on ADV-style bikes, no helmet, shorts, t-shirt, with at least 3 sets of auxiliary LED lights fully ablaze. I'm all for being conspicuous, but come on guys, if you're so concerned about your safety that you need to blind oncoming drivers with an array of aftermarket lights (in the daytime!), at least wear a frickin' helmet and proper riding gear for Pete's sake. Same goes to you Loud Pipes guys. Rant over.

Could not agree more. I have had some motorists become very ticked off at me for just having my high beam on. I'm careful about turning it off now when following for any length of time.

Some of these driving lights are just blinding and illegal.

Sometimes in really insane traffic road conditions, I ride on high beam in daylight to make sure, I have to be talking on my cell phone users are paying attention and notice me.

I have always ran with my high beam on in the daytime. I'm a big believer in making myself very obvious to everyone around me.

high beam all day - at night i don't run it if there is oncoming traffic, but all day long for sure

I think LongRanger was referring to aftermarket auxiliary lights, not just high beam, and I'm quite sure that the All The Lights All The Time But No Gear At All attitude that was most frustrating. I share the frustration.

On the other hand, add me to the High Beam In Daylight Club. Never, not even once, has a motorist or rider during daylight ever signaled me to turn the high beam off. That includes riders in front of me on group rides. I have never been blinded by a bike's headlight when in a car or on a bike in daylight, either. All of my bikes have had just a single headlight and maybe dual-lighted bikes get flashed or signaled more often, but it's likely that those flashing or gesturing are reacting to seeing two lights and are in no way blinded.

Some of the new lights are very bright. My F800GS high beam is insanely bright even during the day. I've had oncoming drivers hit me with the high beams more than once to let me know that.

The FZ1 Gen 2 (Papa Weeley you know what I mean) had very bright dual headlights. When I had mine, a guy in a work van pulled over to let me by and then try to start an incident with me at the next light. He told me my high beams had really ticked him off, and what was my problem.

Of course I had them on intentionally but apologized and said I didn't realize they were on. He was still angry so I got out of there.

Another time a motorist threw a bunch of garbage out the window at me when I was following with the F800GS, high beam on.

I did a test of brightness during the day, got way off and yes, it's blinding during broad daylight. This is a stock headlight and bulb.

To add to the ridiculousness of this, I saw just today an ADV rider, bike was painted safety orange, he had aftermarket high-intensity LED headlight bulbs along with FLASHING auxiliary driving lights. VERY illegal.

These guys are just following a fad. They make sportbike riders look conservative. It's ridiculous. They seem to think conspicuity can replace skill and good judgement. I've been blinded several times by these guys.

Some of the cruiser riders are doing the ultrabright headlight/running light thing as well. Also our CHP have very, very bright headlights and running lights, but nothing like these ADV guys.

It's painful. I usually turn off my high beam if I am following someone for any length of time now.

OTOH I had a lady tell me one of my ZX-10R's headlights was out. I told it was supposed to be that way. She was trying to be helpful. So you never know about people. Most couldn't care less either way though.
Forgot to mention we never see ADV guys out this way without ATGATT.

Exactly. "ATLATTBNGAA" was my observation. Intentionally bringing that much attention to your bike in the name of conspicuity, but ignoring any semblance of head or body protection, just seems a bit ridiculous.

I'm not generally one to ride with my high beam but I do flash it occasionally to alert others.
