Hello all - I just purchased a 2014 CB1100 and found this site.  It's already helped me with finding the right oil filter and crush washer sizes so I can give it a service over the holidays - thanks to The Feret and Suhawk305 for their posts on this in back in 2020!  The Honda joins a 2025 Suzuki GSXR 750 and a 1995 Ducati 900 SS/SP in the garage, which is also home to a 1986 Porsche 911.  Looking forward to learning from the brain trust here, and I will post my attempts at maintenance for your amusement.  Cheers all, Jeb

I thought it would be interesting to see what shipping your bike looks like.  I sold my 2021 W800 to a gentleman near Carson City, NV.  Once I received payment I sent him title and keys and he arranged a pickup and delivery using Haulbikes.  A driver texted me a few days ago and said sometime between today and Monday.  He texted again today at 2pm and we agreed on around 7:00 this evening.  

A massive rig!


The back door is hydraulic, and folds out and down, and then serves as a platform to raise the bikes.  


Two levels and so he ties the bike down on the ramp and we elevate to the second floor.


4 bikes already picked up today; the Vespa on the right is what he rides once he's done for the day.  He's done some things to it; it sounded mean! 


The driver says each level can hold up to 15 bikes; some are too long to go across, but not the W

The bike gets strapped by the handlebars to the walls, and then two more straps to the floor.  It looked solid.


He had 1 more to pick up in Salem for tonight, about an hour south of where I live.  Then 9 more stops tomorrow and Monday and then he arrives in Las Vegas, his home base.  The bike then gets loaded onto another truck and makes its way back north to Carson City.  He said he works all the western states.  Two weeks ago he left Vegas and dropped off bikes all over CA, OR and WA, all the way up to the Canadian border.  Then he picks up bikes on his way back to Vegas.  From arrival tonight to departure, took less than 30 minutes; he had to take lots of photos and video of the bike before loading.  

The buyer paid $700 for the service.  

It was a tough decision to sell the W800 and I'll miss it, but I'm still having fun trying out different bikes. And in the back of my mind, I know that retirement could be as soon as 1 year away.  That means relocating to Tucson for the winter months and splitting time there and in Costa Rica.  So I have a year to get my new KLX300 ready.  Either it, or my DR650 will head to CR and the other will stay in AZ.  The CB1100 stays Stateside as well.

That's the plan anyway, we'll see how it all works out.

I'm in the middle of a suspension project for my DR650--putting on a new rear shock.  I got the shock out and decided it was a good time to check the swing arm pivot bolt and bearings, other linkage as sometimes from the factory they don't have much grease.  Indeed, I was able to pack in quite a bit more on the swing arm pivot bearings.  I moved on to the dog-bone links and one bolt I loosened fine to detach swing arm from the bike, but the other end of the dog-bones has another bolt with bearings.  And I cannot get this bolt free with what I have on hand.

I've tried PB Blaster, applying heat, I'm using a 1.5' breaker bar, acetone and so far the bolt won't budge.  I couldn't find a metal cheater bar I've used in the past, but that might be my next step.  I did find my old air impact wrench, but...it's over 30 years old and doesn't work any more and my even older compressor might not be working well with the higher psi settings.

I started looking at air impact wrenches and, wow, the options. In the back of my mind I thought I might buy a new air impact and I don't even know if my compressor will work with it.  Then somebody on another forum asked me why don't I just buy a chordless impact wrench.  

That didn't even register with me.  Chordless...whaaa...?  My first thought was how does the wrench get air from the compressor if there's no chord?    I'm not always quick with mechanical related things.  After a few online searches it dawns on me that chordless means they got batt...ooooohhhhhh. 

  

Cool! And I resumed my search.

How many chordless impact wrench brands does this planet need?  And how much impact wrench power do I really need considering I'm working mainly on motorcycles?

So with about 20 different internet pages open and my head spinning, I see that perhaps my first decision is whether to go with 3/8" or 1/2".  Seems that some people say 3/8" will do 90% of what you want, others say just go with 1/2" but be careful.  The 3/8" impacts seem to be smaller and lighter...and cheaper, but maybe the reason I need an impact wrench is for that 10% of the time.

Questions: 
1) If I'm thinking for this current 19mm stuck bolt, 3/8" OK or go for the bigger 1/2" because if I have it, I'll use it for more "stuck things" in the future?

2) Brands: Since I haven't even used my air impact wrench in probably 20+ years, I ask myself a) how often will I use it? and b) how long will I live?  In other words, maybe I don't need the best of the best.  I'd like to stay around $200 or less with battery included, which allows me for lots of brand I've never heard of, and maybe allows me to buy a lower end "nice one".  Many seem to like Milwaukee.

--a 3/8" Milwaukee mid-torq impact (3.4lbs / $200 w/out battery)
--a 3/8" Milwaukee M18 compact (2.7lbs / $150 w/out battery)
--a 1/2" Milwaukee M18, heavier

--one that you recommend because of your own experience?

Thanks for any input.  If the cheater bar works, I may not even bother, but at the same time maybe an impact would help me as I age and loose some strength.

Sorry I'm going to miss this one. Dates conflict with my annual fly/camping trip with my airplane buddies.

Too bad as Montrose is actually a pretty short ride from here (compared to previous years).

The back roads on the western slope are some of the best, particularly that run from Durango to Ouray on 550 (watch out for the deer. That's where they got me!).

The weather should be excellent in mid June (and too early for forest fires). I feel bad that I'm not going to be there. Sad

May I suggest an alternative to Route #3. Except for the stretch between Crawford and Blue Mesa Reservour, which is not to be missed, Route #3 really isn't that great. Instead, consider a loop to include the Silver Thread Scenic Byway (CO 149) -- Montrose to Blue Mesa Reservoir to Lake City to South Fork to Pagosa Springs to Durango to Montrose. A nice long day in the saddle and absolutely stunning, especially as you follow the headwaters of the Rio Grande from 10,889' Spring Creek Pass down to Creede and South Fork. There's only one opportunity for gas between Montrose and Lake City (in Cimarron), so plan accordingly,

Looks like a good ride and a long day. My main goal was to include Crawford to Blue Mesa Reservoir. As long as the group is ok with a long ride.İmage

Kenny, that's a great route. For those unfamiliar with the area, the route crosses the Continental Divide in two locations and climbs mountain passes totalling 73,600 vertical feet (Slumgullion Pass 11,530', Spring Creek Pass 10,889', Wolf Creek Pass 10,857', Yellow Jacket Pass 7,785', Molas Divide 10,910', Coal Bank Pass 10,640' and Red Mountain Pass 11,018'.

I would book as soon as you feel comfortable. I did not expect a big enough crowd to reserve a block of rooms this time. Current pricing is hovering around $95-105 per night.

This time of year, it can be chilly in the morning and on top of the mountain pass and hot during the day. I would pack gear that covers 40-90*F plus rain gear. The key is layers.

Last time I rode through Colorado mountains in June, I was caught in a storm but couldn't find my waterproof liner for my riding pants. Once I was soaked, I was miserable. Once I got out of the mountain pass, the sun was out and I was able to dry out and warm up.

I was thinking the optional route 3 from post #6, but none of the routes are set in stone for any given day. In the past, the group has always met for breakfast and decided on the days route.

I will be trailering out myself, with my anniversary on Saturday and funds a little tight this year I decided to find ways to make it a working vacation and haul vehicles each way to pay for the trip.

LOL... I've been watching Django's trip with great interest. It seems to me that his riding days start much later than mine would, especially given the midday temperatures of the areas through which he's ridden. It's possible, though, that I'm not reading his Spotwalla data correctly.

I love Gunnison and the Black Canyon. If you're hiking around there and find a hat from the Gorge Fly Shop in Hood River, OR it's mine. It blew off my head and into the canyon in 2004. Loved that hat.

Awesome. It looks like you're riding the loop in a clockwise direction. If so, instead of taking US50 to Delta / CO92, consider taking I-70 eastbound and exiting at CO 65. Follow CO 65 over Grand Mesa. It meets up with CO92 and you can then resume your route east to Hotchkiss / Crawford / Black Canyon / US 50 westbound.

I enjoyed meeting you guys in Montrose! Thanks for letting me crash the party (not literally).

Departed Montrose at 8:30 this morning and pulled into the driveway at 3:00 this afternoon. My return route was 327 miles (US 50 east over Cerro Summit and Blue Mesa Summit, then over the dam and north on CO 92 along the Black Canyon to Paonia, then up and over McClure Pass (CO 133) to Carbondale for gas and lunch (not "lunch and gas"). Then, up Glenwood Canyon to Vail, where the heavens opened and had no mercy. Cold, heavy rain all the way over Vail Pass until the other side of the tunnel, about 35 miles. Fortunately, it wasn't raining in the tunnel, and no traffic. I was still chilled when I got home but that was a great 24 hour, 600-mile round trip!

I did get a shot of Haystack's bike near the end of a long day's ride. Was he rebelling against authority, or just too tired to notice the sign? Big Grin



I departed Montrose about 9:30 this morning, heading south on US550 towards Ridgway. I got to enjoy this view for many miles.



Then I headed south for Cortez on CO145, crossing the mountains at Lizard Head Pass (10,222 ft.). It was plenty chilly at that altitude, but well worth bundling up for the awesome ride.

A friend of a friend of mine just bought a gently used white 2013 CB1100. Yesterday evening,  it arrived from Quebec to his house in Ontario.
