On the right side of the crankcase the front most polished aluminum plate (pulser cover?) has a slow oil leak. I pulled it off and found no gasket underneath so I put some permatex gasket maker on and sealed it back up to no avail. I know the previous owner dropped the bike and replaced this part. Is it normal to have no gasket? Is there something else I should investigate?
Advise appreciated,
Nick

Hi Nick,
Honda does not use a gasket on any of the outer covers. If the cover had been replaced before, it's possible the surface is not smooth. I would first clean all the old gasket material off both sides material. I use a little pocket whetstone like was used to sharpen pocketknives, and go over both mating surfaces. That will highlight and flatten any imperfections.
Make sure the dowel pins are in place, and use a thin coating per instructions. Be sure to coat the area of the cover around the wire grommet.

I'll second that. Make sure both mating surfaces are clean and flat before adding the liquid gasket. The service manual has a photo for the proper places to apply the HondaBond HT.

LakeWylieJoe, I'm really sorry, but I had to delete the image as it's from the service manual and posting it likely breaches copyright laws.
