On a 2014, the DLC (data link connector) has a dummy cap over the bl/w, br, o/w, g wires. The gear indicator is fed by y, br, rw, bl, gn wires.
Is it different on the 2017?

And just so everyone is clear, Cormanus and I were talking about the Healtech GiPro shift indicator for 2010-2013 bikes. It plugs into the DLC.

popgun, do I recall correctly that you have a Healtech diagnostic device?

Yes, I do have one. The last time I used it was to gather baseline data for the IACV problem.
To use it I just unplug the GiPro and plug in the diagnostic tool. When done just plug the GiPro back in.

Does it give you the sort of information the Honda tool can get from the ECU?

It does read out a lot of parameters including any fault codes. You can start it “recording” and gather data for later playback. You can even do it while riding if you wanted too. But it does need a PC to run.
I used it to find out how the IACV operates from cold start to run when we were working on Dave’s idle problem.
A member in Raleigh, NC (name escapes me right now) used it (he bought one) to pull the code for his TPS problem. Remember? He/we couldn’t interpret the light flashes. Anyway he pulled the code, said TPS, and upon inspection, found a pin not seated correctly in the connector.
I’m not sure if it will clear stored faults. I may have to play with that. I have a stored fault on my ST from doing a throttle body sync. I could clear it 2 ways without a tester, but I should see if the Healtech will clear it.
I have never seen the HDS in operation but from looking at the manual I think it does more, like ABS diagnostics and I don’t know what else right off hand. I would imagine the HDS is pretty heavy duty though. Most dealer only stuff is.

Sounds pretty impressive though. A great tool for me. It’s hard to imagine how much havoc I could wreak with one!

LOL!
If you think you ever want to buy one, go to the Healtech site and download the software (PC only, no Apple support). It has sample runs from a few bikes. When you run the file, you can watch the parameters change. When you hover the cursor over a parameter it tells you what it is and the normal range of values. It does graphing and stuff too. I don’t know what all it does as I haven’t used it much. Just a few runs on my bike. Haven’t connected it to the ST1300 yet.
If you get the software let me know and I’ll email you the file I made from the CB and you can watch that.
