DBM, the very low mileage one gets on the BT54 from tyre is a good reason not to use them, at least in my opinion. However, I agreed that using the tyre size recommended by the manufacturer is a good plan. Except ... it’s been a real problem finding alternatives in the correct size.
I’m trying Bridgestone T31s at the moment, but I gather you can’t get the rear in the right size in the US. I simply can’t understand why, given the relative size of the markets, you can get a tyre in Australia that you can’t get in the US.
