I have not had to loosen mine yet but I wouldn't think you'd need it to break it loose, but to remove and re- install, I'd think you'd need to hold the left side as well..its a 27 mm. If I were doing it on the road, id probably use box end wrenches, preferably 6 point because there is a lot of torque on those nuts, but at home I would use a 6 point socket on each side with a breaker bar on the right side and a ratchet on the left.
Btw if you have a 1 1/4" socket that can be used on the right side as well. Again, preferably a 6 point or a 1 1/4" box end wrench.
