The same applies to the dyes for leather jackets. I bought a Bristol Leathers of Montreal jacket in 1966 when I started riding. I passed it on to my younger brother when I stopped motorcycling in 1989. He still has it almost 3 decades later.
When I returned to riding in 2014, I bought another Bristol Leathers jacket at 10 times the price of the original. After 1 year the colour had faded, more so around the zippers with wear. I spoke to the manufacturer that winter at the local motorcycle show. He explained that is was the change in dyes they were forced to use for environmental reasons. He suggested I try a liquid shoe polish if it really bothered me, but joking said it just patina and will look better with age. Since I am old school and intend to but a heritage styled motorcycle this May, I suppose a well worn jacket will look just right.
