Questions about rev limiter and speed limiter.

Gentlemen,

Perhaps some of our more knowledgable tech members can answer my questions.
1. Does the rev limiter work in every gear?
2. At what RPM does it kick in? (I assume beyond redline as I have accelerated to 8500 rpm without hitting it.)
3. Does the rev limiter cut the fuel or cut ignition?
4. Is it a hard or soft limiter? In other words does it shut ignition off completely like the engine is quitting or does it just retard ignition timing without killing it?
5. Does the speed limiter work the same way, does it cut fuel or ignition?
6. For those who have done it, what does it feel like when you hit the speed limiter? Does it stutter or just run smoothly at 112mph?
7. What does the bike feel like when you hit the rev limiter in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear? You can't hit the rev limiter in 4th or 5th as you would hit the speed limiter first.

A lot of questions I know but I couldn't find answers using the search function. Thanks in advance.

I'll let others with more knowledge cover the rev limiter. I've bounced off the speed limiter several times and it's pretty soft. I suspect that it is cutting the fuel to one of the injectors. It doesn't feel like the abrupt ignition cut off typically used by rev limiters. If you keep the throttle open, the speed will gently oscillate between about 110 and 113.

As the bike has a catalytic converter, I'm almost certain it cuts fuel. Looked bit can't find an actual description of operation.

When I hit the rev limiter in my Ford GT it's pretty violent. At 7000 rpm it cuts ignitition and the effect is dramatic with a huge backfire. In my Mustang hitting the rev limiter is pretty mello. Revs quit building but no dramatic effect. I'm nervous about winding up my CB until something happens.

Won't hurt it. You can hit either limiter with no adverse effects. Try it.

Agreed. My speed limiter has been removed and it sails past 120mph (indicated) pretty easily, but no way will it hit rev limiter in 4th or 5th. Not enough power. Possible on a dyno though.

Nothing will prevent it from doing catastrophic damage though if you decide to get up to 100mph and throw it in 1st to test the limiter. Run it up in 1st though. The rev limiter will prevent damage.

1 & 2 The RPM limiter works in all gears, the tach will read 9000 but its 500 rpm's off, 9000 is really 8500 so its shuts down at 9000RPM's
Confirmed on Dyno

3 Unsure

4 Its a very soft limiter, complete shutdown until you shift to the next gear.

5 Unsure

6 It does not run smooth, It feels like either a fuel of ignition miss.

The rev limiter shuts it down at 9000 RPM. Do you mean 9000 indicated which is actually 8500 RPM or does it shut down at 9000 actual RPM which would be 9500 indicated on the tach (which reads 500 RPM high)?

Our tach reads ~500rpm high. Cip verified this on the Dyno. I verified it on my bike with a SmarTach, but only to 4000rpms.

So when it read 9K the engine is only 8500.

Just thinking, I forgot to see what it is at idle. I'll have to do that and see what it reads.

Popgun is on the money Chip.
Motor shuts down at 9000 indicated which is 8500 When I had mine flashed I added 500RPM's on top so it would kick in at indicated 9500RPM's
