Gas Mileage?

Maybe folks don't necessarily want to share such information, but I'd imaging that one big factor when it comes to gas mileage on our bikes would be the size and weight of the rider. A big/tall guy is going to create more drag than a short/small rider and their gas mileage is going to suffer some because of it.
Yeah, I think this has a lot to do with the difference too. I'm big guy, a lot of wind drag too.

I still say it is the bike and the uniqueness of each one. Some will get amazing mileage and some not. Sure they possibly came off the exact same assembly line, sure they are cast or made from the same mold/plans, but each one is unique...

If you get those amazing close to 60mpg great, if not and your in the 40mpg range I feel for you. The bad or poor mileage that my 1100 was getting played a part in the decision to trade it in... Sorry to say that... Plus the deal I got with $200 over blue book was hard to pass up... Do I regret it, some days, but I will never see a day with more than one bike in the garage, I can safely say I will never be able to afford it.

Just remember as we are all unique as is our bikes no matter the flavor/brands/make/model...

Did I miss a thread while on vacation? Dbuster what did you get?
Not sure I thought I waited until you were back before I got the new ride. A Kawasaki Vulcan 900 custom. Brand new 2011 left over zero miles, they knocked $3000 right off the top plus the trade in, scored bags, Avon grips, and seven year warranty and still dropped my payment and the insurance dropped $250 a year! Not to shabby for my trade in. It took me a year to hit 1000 miles on the cb but I am at 800 in 6 weeks with the Vulcan. So much nicer when you get better mileage and a task can get you over 200 miles before the reserve light comes on.

The cb would flash reserve for me at 120 miles...

If I had all the money that many here seem to have, all hard earned also, I would have the cb in the garage also... But I for one am one who will be working until the end so saving money with gas is up there on my list. That is why I just spent the weekend working 26 hours replacing 600 sq ft roughly of rubber roof over our breezeway saving us over $3000 on the roof job starting tomorrow. Partying the price know with torn up knees but it is worth the savings.

Oh cool. Last I remembered you were researching that model and were about to go in for a test ride. Must liked it ;) sounds like you made a heck of a deal. So sorry the CB didn't work out for you, but sounds like you ended up with a bike you like so all is good in the end. Glad you stuck around even though you no longer have the CB.

Did you post a pic up some place, I'd like to see it.

Before I had the bags put on.. Probably not the right place to share this but was asked here..

One taken after riding out 20 or so miles for a burger with the wife on her scooter at top dawgs - the home if the 100+ different burgers.

You'd think a place called Top Dawgs would have 100 different Hot Dogs lol

Pretty bike. Are those the stock pipes? Just out of curiosity, what kind of mileage are you getting with it?

I am closing in on 3000 miles on my 14 and the mileage seems to be getting better. Last tank my last bar started flashing at 172 and the 65 mile count down to empty began, indicating a tank range of close to 240 miles.

Nice looking bike, dBuster. Reminds me a bit of the Shadow. I really like that red which always seems to me to have the faintest hint of purple.

Too many rides to TDs and I would need a Road King. ;)

Cheers, and nice buy dBuster.

Stock pipes. Wish it had the black stock pipes as these chrome ones show the water spots like crazy. The stock pipes are sounding good also. Might do a different seat next year but the stock is working great for me now. Maybe when the wife wants to 2up then a new seat and back rest will be on the bike.

Last mpg check I was at 53 miles per gallon basically riding the same as I did the cb and was only getting 39-40 mpg with the cb.

I agree with the name of the place but it is out there in a little town of Mindoro, Wisconsin, they have a website I believe. A big biker destination spot. If your there for your first time it takes a while to read all the different burgers, 108 they claim but I think it was more, but you find your ones you like for future visits.

Out riding today, and the bike turned over 3000 miles. Got to 180.6 on the odo and the last bar hadn't started flashing or counting backwards yet. Last tank it went to counting backwards at 172 miles so figured it was getting close. Pulled onto a station and refilled. Took 3.1 gallons, computes out to 58.3 mpg.

You need to twist your wrist a bit more Ferret.

Whattttt? I got up to 65 mph today for at least 10 miles.

Let me rephrase...... LET THE TACH NEEDLE OUT OF IT'S CAGE!!! LET IT FLY, LET IT FLY, LET IT FLY!!!!!! :P

Maybe you need to run the engine and move at the same time a wee bit more, Ferret. :P

Maybe ferret's mpg are because he goes downhill on the bike only? With my experience I find it difficult to imagine a cb getting that mileage. Heck I was flashing reserve on a long distance run of 50+ mph and flashing reserve kicked in at 114 miles! Yeah not cool. Not sure what it was maybe ferret weighs only 98 pounds soaking wet? And I weigh 800, jokingly of course...

Really upsetting my cb sucked for gas mileage...

I get the same mileage, but my drive to work is uphill both ways. I don't think I've ever gotten 120 miles out of a tank. And that back wheel keeps coming out from under me...

I weigh about 195 geared up, but I think my latest jump in gas mileage comes from a couple of things. (1) I ride fairly smoothly and not aggressively. (2) 7/10 mile after leaving my driveway I am on curvy country roads with no stop lights, few stop signs and very little traffic. It is not unusual for me to ride 75 miles with no one in front or behind me. (3) the speed zones I am in are in the 45-55 mph range. (4) I believe it takes less gas to maintain a speed ( steady throttle) than to accelerate and decelerate and (5) the increased use of 6 th gear... whereas I was using 6 th gear only for freeway work, at speeds above 60, I now find myself using 6 th down to 50 mph.

Take a look at the picture below. Typical ride for me (this one was last Sunday morning I believe). Look at the speedo and tach. 50 mph, 2500 rpms. That's how I ride. Neither of my CB's have been over 5000 rpms, it would be really rare for them to see 4000 rpms, mostly I am below 3500 rpms. My normal shift point is about 3200 rpms. Now, it might bore some people to ride like that (and I understand that..ride yours however you like) but that is how I PREFER to ride. This is perfect to me. I love cruising like this. I can, and do, do it for hours on end, day after day. Did it yesterday, did it today, will do it again tomorrow. It's how I roll...pun intended.

I must say Ferrett gets amazing gas mileage, but I'm also amazed this little thread I posted has 2577 views and 96 replies, Oops 97.
:P The only way I can get close to that mileage would be if I get off the bike and pushed.
By the way when I refueled yesterday I was at 44mpg.

BTW several people have gotten in the 60's for gas mileage. Something I've not been able to do.

Well I seem to put 2.9 gallons in every 110 miles, which puts me at 37.9mpg. Still 2.3 times better than my car and 3.2 times better than my truck!
And while I do like a good launch, most of my riding here in TX is high speed highway, meaning huge stretches at 70 mph doing 4000 rpm. bike cruising at 4000 is going to get about 2/3rds the fuel economy cruising at 2700 nets.
