End of the road

So sorry to hear this bad news, VLJ. Glad you are able to type about it at least, and in good care. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Really sorry to hear this, VLJ. Its all-too-common and here in the UK, these type of accidents are known as "SMIDSY"s... "Sorry, mate, I didn't see you".

I hope you make a full recovery - many of us have been where you are and come through it. I'm sure you will.

Good luck and best wishes.

VLJ thanks for letting us know about this and of course best wishes, i remember my hospital stay and aftermath although i was not that badly hurt ( but it felt like it ) .
Sad to read all these cases where bikes and owners fall prey to dozey road users but very important to be made aware of these things so we get a better understanding of what's out there.
For instance since reading about riders beiing hit from behind i have started to practice two things; when stopped behind a vehicle keep enough space in front of you to be able to manouvre sideways quickly and already have an escape route planned, second; while you just sit there with nothing to do i watch my rearview mirror and watch the driver behind me slow down and stop, if he is stopped i can stop watching the mirror and still have enough space in front of me just in case, bad enough to be hit from behind, best avoid to get jammed in between vehicles on top of that.

( what keeps aiplanes safe? the clear space around them! )

Also find that the experiences build up over time make for a list of scenario's that go through my mind when i pass parked cars, side streets, driveways etc, and move to the centerline away from the danger, i almost expect things to go wrong there and when nothing happens that's a bonus.
It is a bit of work to ride like this but it gets second nature after some time and it has paid off on occasions.

And HEY..........let's be careful out there; nypd blues.

So sorry to hear about this. From your description of your injuries, it sounds as if you have no closed head brain injury--thank goodness. In 2001 I had a wreck on my ZRX1200 and broke a collar bone, 4 ribs, lots of soft tissue damage and broke my right pelvis in 13 places. The pelvis required a couple of surgeries and had me toe touch only for 26 weeks with my right leg (wheelchair or crutches), but it is remarkable how a person can come back from those types of injuries. And that was 18 years ago--surgical techniques are likely a lot better today. My heart goes out to you and having been through some of what you have ahead of you, I am available any time if you want to talk about anything ahead. A decision as to whether to ride again is a decision for a future day. Your goal now is to get your life back. Best wishes.

VLJ, For all of us that ride, we are always aware of the risks of our sport. Thanks for keeping us informed of your life event. Day by day, things will get better. Prayers for you and your family during this time of healing.

VLJ, this is ugly, especially at the end of the motorcycle season and you did not need it to happen to you..
Now you need to concentrate on yourself, your health and recovery.
Get good, solid and long term support from your family members and friends = very important!!
Had double femur fracture++ after ugly bike accident half a century ago...
Femur is a big bone and takes time to grow back together, and your case is complex with some surgeries coming...
Follow doctors orders. Stay strong with positive thinking.
Believing in full recovery is your main goal, be determined to succeed and never give up.
When you get home, start exercising as soon as you get OK.

"Failure will never overtake you if your determination to succeed is strong enough”, and I believe it is!

Good luck my friend

Well that sucks about the bike. No sponge baths for her.

You're living my biggest fear; don't bounce like I used to, bones don't heal up like they used to.

I hope you heal up with no lingering issues.

And I hope you get cute and smart nurses. :D

That sucks. I'm glad you're still around to tell the tale. Where did it happen?
Taylor Rd, heading towards those horseland backroads you and I rode together.

So, they had to do an emergency surgery to avoid having to amputate my right foot, and the following morning I managed to freak out my nurse when I bled out, soaking the entire bed.

That was...different. She was not amused.

Lying in an ICU unit now. Broken neck, double compound fracture of the femur, shattered hip, ankle, heel. Thanks to a blind 88-year-old geezer who inexplicably tried to drive straight across a two-lane road, my perfect new Kawasaki is now a decidedly secondhand Kawasaki.
Terrible news! Hoping you make a full and swift recovery. It seems to be the type of accident that happens most often and irrespective of how well or defensively you ride some things you just cannot escape from. Wishing you well and back on a bike when you’re ready.
