I've done some looking but i can't seem to figure out any hard numbers. Has anybodoy had occasion to get an exact weight measurement of the front and rear OEM wheels without tires?

Thanks so much for this Peking. I'm comparing to Aluminum and Magnesium wheels to get a handle on exactly how heavy or light we're talking about. It looks like quite a few AL wheels are about 8lbs front and 11lbs rear. Magnesium or 6.5 and 8 respectively. that's a pretty big difference.

Just for fun, I weighed a couple wheels I had lying around, no discs or sprocket drives.
2012 Triumph Thruxtons were 10.2 front, 16.9 rear. Honda CBR250R front - 9.5 Suzuki SV1000 front - 9.8

the thruxton is probably closer to ours, all things considered. I'll keep this issue open until somebody has a source that shows the true weight of the stock wheels though.

when I bought my 2013 I did not like the partly black wheels and bought from Mr. T. a new set of wheels all silver.
However when the 2014 came out with all silver wheels I decided not to change the wheels on the 2013 and therefor I still have a new set of wheels in the basement and just weighed them. Front 6.7 kg is 14.74 lbs. ( with bearings and air valve ) Rear 7.4 kg is 16.28 lbs. ( with bearings and air valve ) There is not that much difference as the front has two "carriers" for the discs and the rear only one. Now you can close this thread....

The wire wheels from the 2017 are about 5 pounds lighter on the front, just over a pound lighter at the rear.
We can't close this thread until we hear from.............

So, depending on how much those bearings actually weigh, it seems like our stock wheels really are not much heavier than high end upgraded Alloy wheels, unless you go crazy and get Magnesium. frankly, if i'm going to save less than 10 lbs, i'm not inclined to spend the money. So the final comparison is: 8lbs. + bearings (aftermaket AL front) vs. 14.74lbs (OEM front) and 11lbs. + bearings (aftermarket AL rear) vs. 16.28 lbs (OEM rear) There is one more person i'm interested in hearing from. I seem to remember Chync put 17" spoked wheels on his bike, and i've talked to him about that conversion, but I don't have any record of what exactly his wheels weigh. He seems like the kind of guy that would have recorded that information. my first instict is that there's not really going to be any weight savings, but I could be wrong. |
