fuel pump whine
#1
Hey yall, got a 13 with 106 miles cleaned tank and pump assy, got about 500miles now , pump is very noticeable in how it sounds like a vacuum leak, it was pulsing earlier , bike runs ok but twice when down to two bars on gas gauge and about 85 miles on tank it would buck / surge when rolling past 5000 rpm in the lower gears like it was lacking fuel so i filled it up and only took 2.4 gal. Twice it has died when stopped but fires right back up, she is stock and looks awesome like new but it did sit for a number of years, any ideas before i buy a pump assy with my kids college fund? ive never heard a pump make this much noise on either mine or friends bikes

First place i would look is the 3 pole connector because it is easy to do.
The black ground wire is common to the pump and the fuel gauge ( "shows down to 2 bars" and "Twice it has died when stopped but fires right back up" ), check if the connector gets warm which indicates a bad connection when the pump is running at 5 Amps.

When the contacts fail or get dirty on the fuel sensor in the tank the display shows an unusual indication ( see the owners manual ), not a lower one which is why i suspect the ground side connection inside or outside the fuel tank.

Next question is which parts on the pump have been moved cleaned or altered and did it make this new noise before the tank was cleaned ( which is a good idea i think ).

Rather than buying a whole assembly you could buy just the right fuel pump, it is just an automotive one with the right connections, try googling pictures of fuel pumps and see which one resembles our type.

Some others may have more suggestions.

Thanks for the info , the connector looks like new and doesnt get hot , i messed with it this morning , can you hear your pump even while riding ? Im still riding mine just seems odd the way it acts. when I put the pump assy back in I didnt disturb the assy , so really when under WOT with about 1.5 gal left it seems like she want to starve for fuel , it only took 2.4 gal to fill her up. anybody got the same situation?
Anybody out there know whats the automotive equivalent to the pump?
