fuel pump connector
#1
Removing the tank... read the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and following steps. The fuel pump 3 pin connector is what stumps me. HOW DOES IT RELEASE? There appear to be tabs on top and bottom as well as side but I can't get them to release. Anyone know how to release this connector?

By the way, the U-tube how-to is pretty much a joke. The guy doesn't release pressure on the tank and just pops everything apart in less than a minute. I suspect they want to make power commander install look as easy as possible.

If you look at the connector you will see a little tab in front of the red wire. Pull the tab back and hold it (I used my thumb) and the connector to the tank will slide right out, easy peasy.

... Had to wait for someone to show up...

I figured someone would, but they didn't so I went in the garage and undid the connector to make sure I remembered how. Wink

You were 100 percent correct. Thanks! Funny... you would think with a bike like the CB1100 folks would want to take stuff apart and make mods...

BTW: the manual is so lame it is a joke. For instance, when told that cables don't meet spec (stretch and don't have correct freeplay) the manual tells you to change cables. Doesn't tell you how. I put some of those knock-off KuryAkyn grips on and fought with the cables to get the throttle on and then found that the knock-off throttle where it pivoted in the switch housing was too fat and rubbed and the throttle didn't return without twisting. A dead man's throttle is OK but if you get into a pinch, you really do want the throttle to return on its own.

I didn't want to fight the cables back off so I need to add some slack from the injector side. They don't tell you how to do that or what needs to come off to do this but it seems that having the tank and air box cover off will help give access.

At my dealer the service manager/head mech. told me the service manual is written for an experienced Honda mechanic that is expected to know such things, OR, it could be in the Common Service Manual.

When I put the Honda heated grips on my ST1300 there were pretty detailed instructions for removing and re-installing the cables. I think the CB heated grip instructions has them too. If you need let me know and I will post the link to them.

Also note that when replacing the tank the service manual stipulates the connector should be replaced. Although I've had the tank off a number of times I haven't done this. Next major, maybe.

I have an old factory Honda "Potpourri" general service manual dating back to the 1970s, and in it are hundreds of useful tips for use by Honda motorcycle technicians.

It details things like electrical, ignition and fuel system repairs, engine and drivetrain theory of operation, and a host of other things like common bolt sizes and fastener grading with torque tables.

In this fine manual is a poorly translated warning section. Of particular amusement is a stern warning:

"Do not eat or ingest the seat foam"
