Crankcase over filled

I recall a thread/conversation about over filled crankcases when the bikes were picked up from the dealer.
I decided to check my sight glass this morning and the oil level was above the upper level mark with no air space. I carefully removed the drain plug (it was very tight) and drained a bit at a time until I saw a bit of air space. The bike is stone cold and on the center stand.
The oil level is at the upper level mark now, but I'll check it again after I've ridden it to make sure I didn't go overboard.

Ok, the word on this is as follows.

If you put the bike on the side stand (not center stand) and look at the sight glass, does the level come to the correct marker. If it comes down to proper level it should be fine to go. If it is still over the marker on the side stand you have way too much oil in there and you need to bring it down. The dealer should do this, but you can suck it out with a turkey baster and soda straw, or drain it off by backing out the drain plug carefully. Problem with the latter method is you will spoil the crush washer on the drain plug and that would be hard to overcome if that would bother you.

They did mine at the dealer and the washer was not an issue...they just did it and didn't bother.

Yea it seems pretty common that they come over filled. Remember it gets checked on level ground, on the center stand (or at least standing straight up and down), after several minutes of warm up and several minutes of cooling and technically only needs to be between the upper and lower line.

LOL would have enjoyed watching someone trying to drain a little at a time out of a drain plug.. it's usually like pulling your thumb out of a hole in the dyke. Let off a little pressure and whoa baby here it comes.

*Edit..Meowguy..you won't see any oil in the window on the side stand with the correct amount of oil in the bike..

I don't beleive all the bikes are over filled there is 2oz more because the engine is going to use 2oz for the first 600 miles until the rings get setted. if you check your oil at 600 miles it well be at the upper fill mark.

That's how I did it ferret - and I think you would have been proud of me to have succeeded
I backed off the drain plug until I could feel it was free of the threads, but still held it hard against the hole.
I then tipped the plug a bit to allow some oil to slowly run out (and all over my hand), then screwed it back in. I did this 4-5 times until the oil level was where I thought it should be.
But believe me, I was in mortal fear every time that I might drop the plug and have the whole crankcase drain
I didn't have any other way to do it so I just went for it.
Even though I reused the factory crush washer, I went for a ride and there is no leak - and the oil level is fine.

Act- cb11. I think all the cb11 come with a full window. No big deal. Maybe 2 or. 3oz. Ferret is rite on side stand no oil can be seen in window

It wasn't a huge amount. I would say it's about 1/4 of a litre.
A litre is close to your US quart so you can gauge from that.
I feel more comfortable knowing the oil level is where it should be.

Chevy did it right in this regard. My '81 Z28 (this was maybe 5 years ago or so) never needed an oil change; just a quart of oil every week!
