Maybe the system needed bleeding. I doubt it. But flushing? Maybe the actuating piston was binding on the return spring or housing, and then, after some use, freed. The spring returns the piston, and consequently the lever, to position. But, again, why only 1 and 2? I dunno, just the musings of a bush mechanic.
