You were 100 percent correct. Thanks! Funny... you would think with a bike like the CB1100 folks would want to take stuff apart and make mods...
BTW: the manual is so lame it is a joke. For instance, when told that cables don't meet spec (stretch and don't have correct freeplay) the manual tells you to change cables. Doesn't tell you how. I put some of those knock-off KuryAkyn grips on and fought with the cables to get the throttle on and then found that the knock-off throttle where it pivoted in the switch housing was too fat and rubbed and the throttle didn't return without twisting. A dead man's throttle is OK but if you get into a pinch, you really do want the throttle to return on its own.
I didn't want to fight the cables back off so I need to add some slack from the injector side. They don't tell you how to do that or what needs to come off to do this but it seems that having the tank and air box cover off will help give access.
