O2 sensor eliminator — why?

I believe that veech understands that.

What he and others like myself are concerned about is that the O2 Sensor will foul beyond repair if not removed. With it unplugged but left in the header, the preheat circuit will not burn off any carbon and the sensor will just continue to coke up. Then, if one decides to remove the Eliminator Plug at a later date, the O2 sensor would likely be toast and need to be replaced. At $200 or more, that is not a cheap proposition.

I remember seeing similar discussions on the Triumph site. My wife had an EFI Bonnie and it did seem to smooth out a bit when the O2 was removed. The 2014 DLX I recently got has no such issues...I'm figuring if it ain't broke I ain't gonna fix it. - Karl

After doing some reading and purchasing one of these O2 eliminators, I installed it in my bike last night. All traces of the initial sputter when accelerating from a stop or driving at steady low RPM's are completely gone. Throttle response is smooth as butter now. Such a cheap mod to give such a drastic performance improvement.

I dont notice anything with mine either Karl. I wish I had ridden some of the other CB's at the rally for guys that say their bikes had this issue because I have never felt anything but creamy smoothness. Also wish I had ridden and tested someone elses bike that says their rear brakes were strong, because I've had 2 and the rear brakes have been poor ( IMO) on both of them.

I never really had any serious issues with engine management, the CB being so much better than most EFI bikes, but had noticed a little sputter at low steady throttle at times. Bypassing the O2 sensor eliminated that small annoyance and made my CB smooth as a perfectly setup carb equipped bike.

For the most part I have ignored this thread, but decided to read through it since I had some time on my hands.
Interesting reading and interesting conclusions.
I'm with the ferret and another poster, my bike is creamy/silky smooth from start, idle and all the way through the rev range.
Strange how some are having a problem and some aren't. (?)
Anyway, it ain't broke so I too am not going to fix it.

I don't think the oxygen sensor heater is meant to "clean" the sensor. The HO2S won't generate a signal until it reaches around 600 degrees F. Almost all sensor heaters only work a short amount of time because once the engine reaches normal operating temperature, the heat of the exhaust is sufficient to maintain 600 F. I'm pretty sure the proper fix for a "sputtering" problem isn't defeating the closed-loop/feedback system, but unless/until my bike sputters, I'll likely never know. Wish me luck.

You are probably correct. I based some of my earlier comments on an actual suggestion that I received from the manufacturer/supplier of the O2 Sensor Eliminator Plugs. He provides the O2 Lambda Sensor block-off screw in most of his kits because he stated that it is safer to remove the sensor if you ever intend to run a closed loop system again at a later time. Whether the preheat circuit helps to "clean" or not was really my interpretation, but he was concerned about the long term damage to the sensor if it is left in place and unused.

The true test will be to see if a sensor that was left in the header still works after using an eliminator plug for a year or more.
