You didn't do a wide enough search for K&N failures. K&N failures probably rank second only to FRAM oil filter failures, but the type of failures typical with a K&N motorcycle filter are more likely to get you killed.
I have found reports of K&N leaking nut failures on Honda Interceptors, ST1300s, and CB1100s. Furthermore, there have been reports of K&N filters with ruptured and leaking O-Ring seals on bikes ranging from Aprilias to Harleys.
The leaking nut issue is not restricted to K&N motorcycle filters and has been reported on K&N filters used on everything from GM LS1 engines to marine applications.
In other words, it is not just an isolated problem on CB1100s only. It is most likely just plain bad spot welding technique and poor quality control. It has been going on for over 5 years, which makes me wonder when the bad PR will finally catch up with K&N. As if it wasn't bad enough that their performance claims for Cold-Air Intakes are misleading or untrue for anything other than wide open throttle racing applications...

just a public service announcement for some that may be using any manner of aftermarket filters....
.
A year (maybe two) ago, many of the automotive filters changed the end design to a convex profile .vs a concave profile.
This convex profile sometimes causes the metal end cap to bottom first on the oil filter boss, prior to complete gasket mating - resulting in everything from seepage to an outright squirt.
I am NOT saying you'll have this problem. Just saying that it's something to be aware of.
Here's a pic of two filters that used to have iidentical end caps. I know, different part numbers. Just trust me here. The one on the left is new stock - the one on the right is old stock.

As far as the the HIFLO filters go - they are a fine filter. We've used them, and several of the local dealers stock them.

since 2011, I've been using the K&N spin on filter w/ the hex nut on my Suzukis Burgman 650 and currently on my Vstrom 650. I think I went through about 8 of them so far. Not a single problem w/ them leaking and/or grenading on me. I honestly don't know what to think about this.

Jedd, someone stuck a K&N filter on my bike at a major service. It happened just after davidargee's post about his drama. I was inclined to trust that all would be well until I was with Pterodactyl when his K&N filter failed. I rode a good few kms before changing mine out, but when I realised I was going to be on my own in some out-of-the-way places decided not to take the risk. I put on a HiFlow filter. So far it's been fine, but I'm about to change the oil and replace it with an OEM filter.
If you're riding locally and keep a good eye on things, I wouldn't worry too much; if you're off travelling, I'd change it.

Actually, I didn't search at all, I just took the word of the person I was talking to and the fact that no one on that board had reported any failures. This is good information though, thanks for sharing. I always stick with the OEM oil filters for my vehicles.
