I haven't taken the time to figure this out yet (because of a combo of laziness and the fact that it hasn't done it to me again since I posted), but I was thinking about it and I don't think it is the kickstand sensor.
The bike will normally start with the kickstand down if it is in neutral.
When this happens, the start button won't work even when in neutral. Think it is likely the button assembly itself.
