They're not nearly as efficient as chains. We don't notice it, because you can't change one motorcycle from belt to chain and back again, but I have a belt-driven bicycle and I can absolutely feel how much more efficient a well-lubricated and adjusted chain is. But the cleanliness is nice. I can ride this bike to work without worrying about ruining my tan work slacks. To answer the OP's title question: I lube & clean my motorcycle chains about every other tank fill-up (about 400-450 miles) and I usually get about 30K miles per chain.
