CB1100 Idle speed instability problem

In my case, with the 2013 standard, replacing the iacv was a $700 waste of time. I read how difficult it was and decided to have it done at a shop. I paid the money and left with high hopes of a good running bike. It went right back to the problem very quickly. Only when I replaced the ECU did the problem completely and permanently disappear. I did the ECU replacement myself and it was quick and easy. I ordered the replacement from Partzilla and it had a different part number than the original, but it looked the same. That was for a 2013 standard. I don't know about other years or if other years have the problem. I wish the best of luck to anyone with this problem.

Replacing the ECU seems to me consistent with the European experience of having the problem fixed by Honda upgrading the software (re-flashing the ECU). What doesn't make sense to me is Honda America denying there was a problem that could be fixed easily with a quick re-flash. Did Honda Japan not tell them, or did they not want to hear? Or is it something else again?

Cormanus, I agree and it was not only Europe that knew about this. One of our (old) Forum members from South Korea wrote that he had the problem and his local Honda shop replaced the ECU and fixed it. After reading that, I decided it was worth a try. I can only think the problem lies with Honda (Motorcycles) US.

Based on my experience in Italy, before the ECU update, I discovered the existence of the new software through the CB1100 worldwide page in Facebook, so I wrote to Honda Service more than a couple of times to know if an update was available, obtaining only negative replies. Only after a long discussion (face to face) with the mechanic, I obtained to connect my Honda to the diagnostic PC and only then appeared the updated version of the software, because there isn’t a list of the available software for ECU update. Based on the following discussion with the dealer, it seems that Honda never informed them about the update as they were informed for other motorcycles. Also: the update was be done for free and with all their apologies.

Hello fabrimtb. Thank you for this information. Can you please clarify? Was the new software updated by your dealer after you returned your motorcycle to the shop? Were you experiencing any of the idle instability issues discussed on this forum prior to taking your bike to the shop? By any chance, was your dealer able to offer any explanation describing why Honda provided this update, and why it has been kept relatively secretive?

Thank you.

Hello Dave,
Since I bought used in 2018 my CB1100 '13 with less than 8.000 miles, it suffered some issues related to the idle.
During the first period it had a idle instability with 1.800 rpm, solved during the warranty period (mandatory in Italy when you buy an used vehicle from a dealer) with the cleaning of the IACV and soft reset of the ECU errors.
After in the following year, bike started to have sporadic problems to the idle, 600 rpm, in different situations, hot weather, stop and go traffic, long mountain descents, cold weather. I did a diagnostic in the Honda dealer before the warranty expired, but no errors were found in the ECU. They told me that similar problems occurred in bikes with last pollution requirements. Since then I started my investigations to understand the cause of the problem not only on my bike but on what experienced from others. How you already know, this problem is common for a lot a CBs produced since 2010 to 2016, also if less in the period from 2014 to 2016. No reports for the last models produced since 2017. I started considering how and which values ECU reads from different sensors, so I learned that it reads also analogic values (volts rather than ON/OFF values). So I started to analyse which could be the consequences of the battery voltage on the behaviour of the bike. You have to consider that the main headlight has a power consumption of 55 W constantly, also if you are running in the traffic at low rpm with less charge from the generator. I found that starting a ride with a completely charged battery, the idle instability problem was reduced, but not disappeared particularly with hot weather, so I think to problems related with the hot temperature of the engine (checking on the while if in the world someone was able to find the solution...). To low the engine temperature I decided to install a modified IAT sensor to have a different Air/fuel ratio. Compared with other CBs the hot from the engine is effectively lower. The idle instability with hot weather disappeared, but remained with long hill descents. I reduced the power consumption of the battery, installing a LED H4 lamp on main headlight, but not sorting positive effects. Until this year I lived with the problem but able to live with it understanding when it have could appeared and able to solve it, switching of and on the engine on run, and basically rarely. Also I reported everything to the other dealers in the area asking for a solution, without any kind of reply. Since of the end of last year, I started to read in the web some good news about the availability of an updated ECU software in some countries (Germany, Austria) solving the idle instability. Since than I started to contact Honda dealer to know the availability of the updated software without positive reply. And as I wrote, after requesting to connect the bike to the factory PC, Honda mechanic was able to find the update. No comments about the update by Honda, on the PC only appeared the available (and suggested) update software for the CB. They weren't able to explain the reason for which they never received an alert about it. It seems that the update has been released in 2025 , no more info. Unbelievable from a company like Honda, but it is so. Anyway I did the update in July, since then no problems 🤞. I hope it's clear now.

Thank you fabrimtb. It sounds like you have an electrical engineering background? It seems that the root cause of most of the idle issues is the ECM, but this doesn't explain why replacing the IACV on my bike completely and permanently cured my idle issue, and others who replaced their IACV achieved similar results. I have not heard if the ECM update is available in the U.S.A. When I contacted Honda several years ago I was informed that Honda could not legally perform any changes to the ECM because this would violate their certification for meeting emission standards.

I also contacted Honda and at the time (late 2016) they said they had no knowledge of an ECM update in the U.S. or for Europe. I asked them because one of our members (from Germany?) at the old site informed us that when he took his bike to the dealer, they did have notification of an ECM update, it was performed, and no more issues for him.
