Taking Off Handlebar Grips
#1
Just a contribution that I learned years ago...

If you are considering changing handlebars or want new grips, getting the old grips off can be difficult. If you have an air compressor (best investment I've ever made), you can point the blower into the inside edge of the grip and BANG! that puppy will just fly off. Peel up the inside edge of the grip, poke the blower kind of in the grip and pull the trigger.

Of course you can cut off the old ones if you don't want them but if you want to save them, this is a real easy way to get them off.

If you do not have an air compressor you can use WD40 to undo the glue and slide the grips off, But remember to clean off all the WD40 wish soap and water (I use strong dish soap) before reinstalling and of course clean up the bars too.

A neat trick I use to put the grips on is to use 4-6 zip ties inside of the grip which will help slide in the grip with less friction and once its in there you pull the zip-ties out one by one and boom! You got your grips installed.

I have used the WD40 approach, for years. Works great. I had never heard the zip tie trick. That is genius! Thanks. Usually, I just wash the inside of the grip with alcohol, and slide it on real quick.

I have always used denatured alcohol. Pry up the edge of the grip, squirt a little inside, and twist the grip off. Harmless to most paint and very slippery for about 10 seconds before it dries.
Works nicely for re-installation too.

A can of Dust-off worked for me. I just had to use a wire hanger to loosen the glue then slid the Dust-off straw under the grip...

Probably easier with an air compressor but it's hard to beat $5 or whatever for a can of Dust-off.

After installing the new grip...and this is the track bike thing to do, i always put a ring of safety wire around the inside of the grip. Poke the cut off portion down into the grip itself. Yes, glue, i know...but...
