Too much weight to balance front tire?
#1
Hello All,

Recently bought a set of Pirelli Sport Demons to replace the factory tires on my 2014 CB1100. After mounting the tires, I brought them to a local motorsports dealership to have them balanced. After retrieving them I was told the rear tire balanced fine but the front tire took 3 oz. to balance out. He then told me that this is almost three times the required weight to balance an aluminum, front motorcycle wheel. They then rotated the tire 180 deg. and it still took 3 oz. to balance. I bought the tires through Bike Bandit and reached out to them and Pirelli. Bike Bandit told me to contact Pirelli and Pirelli told me to contact Bike Bandit. Took the bike out, since it needed to be moved to another location, and no issues or vibration ever came from the front tire even up to ~80 mph. Should I stick with this tire or attempt returning it?

Thank you,

If it's working fine, I'd stick with it.

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it.

Hes done that for me 3x over the years w/out having me to ask. other times i was like screw it and ran with it . never an issue.

Thank you!

I've used up 100+ tires on the race track and wouldn't sweat it if balanced. I've stuck on up to 2.5 oz and spun it up to 140+ on track. (GSXR 1000)
I'd say you're fine.

My Bonneville currently has two strips of weights on the back wheel. The shop who has changed my tires for years commented that it's more weight than they're used to, but it would be ok unless I felt any vibration. Granted, that's a Malaysian-built spoke wheel, not a Honda-built cast wheel, but I've had smooth riding on it for a few years now. If it rolls smoothly, probably not a big deal as long as it's confirmed that there's no damage to the wheel.

3 oz (85 grams) is indeed a fair amount to be out, but it happens. I would hope the shop marked the tire for the initial heavy spot to verify the re-balance heavy spot was in the same part on the tire.

The tire should have a yellow circle or dot on the sidewall to mark the light spot on the tire that is aligned with the valve stem location. This would maybe require a little less weight. But if there is no affect in riding, I wouldn't be concerned.

i had an Avon rear tire take 3 oz's once, but that seems like a lot for a front tire. that said, sport demons are my favorite tires on this bike so far.

How many miles do you have on them? These are my first set after the factory ones.

Ride it!. I’m on my 3rd and last set of Sport Demons on a Guzzi V7R. A 750cc (395 pound bike when dry) at a little over 7,000 miles. Good grip. No complaints about handling. However, ABYSMAL tire life. What it’s cost me now in having tires put on I could have paid for another set of tires with much better longevity. Please stick around the forum and let us know how they wear. I’d be interested to see if I’m an outlier in that area but don’t think so. Have heard this from others that use them. Make SURE you keep the front inflated to spec to prevent premature cupping from starting.

Frulk, I had a similar disappointing experience with Sport Demons on my V7C. They were fine while they lasted, but we're talking maybe 4000 miles max.
