Looking to come back to riding after a long time, I have a 1100 CB available, firstly it seems to have the idle problem (I’ve read a part of a big thread on it and advantage I have is that check engine is showing so maybe I can tell what’s wrong) secondly which is a bit odd is that owner claims it’s only 5 shifts, but it’s says 2014 on the frame, that normal ?

Welcome, hawary. Can you look at the engine cover near the gear lever? It should show the number of gears. A second clue lies in the instrument panel. Does it have a gear indicator? If it looks like this one it is likely to be a 6 speed.

If it’s like this one, it will have 5 gears.

Finally check the VIN. What is the 10th digit? ‘D’ says it’s a 2013; ‘E’ says 2014.

Maybe the owner doesn't know 1 down, 5 up.

I’m so tempted to pull the plug but this idle thing is a bit scary, and I fit the bill perfectly.
A lot of stop and go inside the city: Check
Small mileages: Check
High temperatures all year long: Check
Incompetent Repair: Check
Only “upside” is that the bike is showing an engine indicator sign, but all the symptoms lead to the same idle issue.

nobody would blame you...purchasing a motorcycle with what appears to be a pre-existing issue is usually a complete dealbreaker in my book.

Can you get a dealer to check the engine codes before you settle on the purchase and the price?
PS, do you know what year it is yet?

Dealer ? No. Contacted the dealer today and they said they don’t deal with Cb1100’s because there are none here which is another red flag.
I know another person who has the device that could potentially diagnose the problem but can’t change anything programming wise.
The owners description of the problem is almost identical to the idle issue described here.
There is a chance that the check engine is referring to another problem other than the idle rpm issue which would be a major blow as well.
It’s a 2014

You can read the code out without a diagnostic device. I forget the manual procedure but it is not hard. I, or someone, will have to post it or look in the service manual.
Once you trigger it, you MIL will flash the code and we can look it up.
