my CB1100 had not been run much lately, so I took her out for a spin last Friday and end up with a leaky head cover again. So during the weekend I took her apart again to fix the leaky head and do another valve clearance check (only 6000km since last check), and surprised with quite a huge different in clearance compare 6000km ago.... Few things would like you guy's opinion:
1) Does bike's cylinder cover rubber seal last longer if it is ridden regularly, like everyday, compare to weekend/ once a month ride??
2) Is our CB1100 cylinder head cover more prone to oil leak because being an air cool engine? hence the short 12000km valve clearance check? Or should I just put more messy RTV??
3) Most intake valve's clearance had increase with just this 6000km usage, but most exhaust valves stay the same.. Possible carbon built up??
4) 1 intake valve is out, at a slightly tight drag on 0.008inch (0.2mm) feeler, . But no noisy valve sound... Should I just leave it?
5) Talking about carbon built-up, a friend recommended me to do a carbon clean up (workshop pour something into fuel tank and rev out lots of white smoke) before shimming because according to his experience, all his valves become too tight after he did a carbon cleanup. So is this carbon clean up really cleaning out the carbon deposit? or corroding the valve seat??
6) Does CB1100 shims same with Kawasaki ninja 250 7.48mm shims? I had a set of ninja 250 7.48mm shims I used in my ninja 650. But not sure if it is compatible with CB1100.
Thats about all from me being indecisive "problematic" rider..

Zirconxi,
Might I ask, where exactly is the cover leaking?

6000km ago its near the front center till left, from where its facing the oil cooler. This time, its near the inside curved, between the 2nd and 3rd sparkplug and center of the cam chain chamber (both side of the center curve) , and rear near the throttle cable.

The service manual does not call for sealant on the gasket. Only Three-Bond or equivalent at the “semi-circular cutouts as shown”.
It say to inspect the cylinder head cover packing for wear or damage, replace as necessary.
If it was me I’d replace the seal and torque to specs: “install and tighten the cylinder head cover bolts in a crisscross pattern in two or three steps to the specifed torque. 10Nm or 7 foot lbs.

IMHO, I think you should take your CB to a knowledgeable and experienced Honda or moto tech, do regular FJ maintenance, and the most important: stop experimenting yourself..+++ !

I like to diy most of my vehicles, unless i don't have the tools, else i would diy myself.
Btw, what's a FJ maintenance?

FI stand for fuel injection (misspelled FJ, my bad)
Should dump FI cleaner in your gas tank from time to time, at least once a season.
Properly used will keep your valves clean from carbon build up, mostly intake.
I do this treatment to all of my vehicles, and the best is if you apply it 2 tanks before oil change. Good luck.
