Front sprocket bolt cant be moved

i'm honestly strongly tempted. if anybody can do it i know it's you, and I think the janky chain still has enough life in it to make it that far.

edit: gonna have to watch the weather very carefully. It's iffy on Sunday.

Just for kicks: set your electric impact to tighten, and give it a couple of seconds, then immediately switch the impact to loosen and see if it budges. Another alternative is to use a hand impact tool. Only downsize is it will put stress on the countershaft bearing. If you’re willing to go this route; HF sells them. Make sure to get the 1/2’ drive set. That way you can use an impact socket. Good luck!

I do actually already have that, I was using it previouosly to deal with ancient screws that i'm worried about stripping out.

Does that actually have a better chance at working than a power tool?

Got a Harbor Freight near you? If not- Amazon or Ebay will work... or you can probably find something used that will do the job on your local Facebook Marketplace or Craig's List..

unfortunately, for the money any new tool will cost me I could just about pay the shop an hour of labor to swap it out for me, which It looks like is exactly what's going to happen. I'd rather do that than risk making it worse with my continued fumbling.

I don't know what a shop charges for an hour by you, but...

Pay a shop once- get one job done.

Buy a tool and learn- never pay a shop again.

And there are plenty of modern tools for less than an hour of shop time that will zip that right off...

I have yet to find one that doesnt taste like beer...the tasting like beer part is the problem. Its kinda like coffee. No matter what you put in coffee its gonna still mostly taste like coffee.

Compare that to the warm buttery golden sweet magic flavor that is good scotch and theres just no contest.

Incorrect...but like people that hold strong their politics or sports, or won't try new foods or listen to different types of music...well, have fun with what you think you like...because you won't know what you are missing...

FWIW, i have a full fridge in the garage. there 3 beers in it, not for me (for guests) and i never drink in the shop or working on anything, ever. The fridge carries a lot of overflow from my wifes cooking.

Went out last night to a bike night, had ONE guinness, thats it. Im def a 1 and done beer guy, but i make it count.

Exact opposite my garage... always new and exciting beers..plenty of them..with good tunes and depending on the weather we often end up at the fire pit later in the night.

Oddly, no one i know locally drinks in the garage working on stuff, we wait till after the work is done. Even when we were kids, just didnt happen.

Meanwhile, back at the front sprocket, how is it going, Misterprofessionality? Any progress? We've learned a lot more about how folks deal with alcohol in the garage than we have about how to get that sprocket off. Any luck?

Yes, back to work, you slackers!

The bolt is a special part number, likely hardened. It's a standard 10mm thread, used only for holding the sprocket on. If you've tried chemicals like Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster or equivalent, you need to apply heat.

Using a propane torch, apply heat directly to the bolt head - you can't access any other portion of the shaft, and the sprocket will just dissapate heat. The heat will dissolve any non-metallic bond between the threads.

I would suggest ordering a new bolt, just in case the threads were compromised. If they were, you should run tap into the countershaft threads.
