Frequency of chain oiling?

Can one see/inspect o-rings for wear ?
Is the cost of a new chain (or whether it lasts 10k or 15k miles worth a lot of concern ?
Is there a risk of a fatal accident if a chain isn’t frequently greased?

I tend to say, oil it now and then, check tension (mine hasn’t changed in over 10k mikes), and ... ride.

Gecko...How many miles on your rear tire? If less than 10,000 your chain got an adjustment when the new tire was put on.

Mine doesn't seem to require adjustments between tire changes though.

I spray lube mine when it looks dry or if I ride in the rain.

First chain went 36,909 miles. Current (replacement oem chain) chain has gone 36,228 miles so far.

Hi Ferret, rear tire done at 5000 (and they didn’t adjust the chain, it had 2 1/2” of slack when I got home), since then another 8 000. My chain has not lengthened since then. I cannot explain it, I am just happy about it.

That I said 10,000 came about when I read the poster’s name and thought he was located outside tge US.

That your bike came home from a shop without the chain being properly adjusted after a tire change, considering they have to remove the wheel to perform the service is just sad.

Like I said mine hasn't required adjustments between tire changes which is generally 8-9,000 miles.

I use Valvoline 80W-90 gear oil every 500 miles, it does the trick.

... a FortNine favourite.

If I weren't so lazy, this would be the way I would do it too.

I was thinking the same thing about the chain oiler, it's a great idea but between the cost and time to install I'm not sure it's worth it.

The CB11 is one of the few bikes that has a built in center stand so chain maintenance takes 1-2 minutes?

... for sure, some auto-oilers are a pain to install and manage - particularly where electrical has to be routed.

Yes! This keeps all 3 of my motorbikes chainoiled. With the center stand it's an easy job.

Two or three times a year I soak a rag in WD40, put the bike on the center stand and spin the rear tire, holding the rag on the chain. Go around two or three times, then paint 90wt gear oil on the chain at the sprocket with a small brush. I don't ride that much anymore, less than 5k/yr.
